The Cell Cycle
Interphase
• G1 – 1st growth phase
• S – synthesis (copying) of DNA
• G2 – 2nd growth phase
• The cell grows and copies
its DNA in preparation for
dividing.
Prophase
• The DNA condenses
into chromosomes.
• The centrioles start to
build the spindle.
Metaphase
• The spindle fibers line
the chromosomes up
in the middle of the
cell on the metaphase
plate.
Anaphase
• The centrioles start to
reel in the spindle,
pulling the chromosomes
apart and sending half
of them to each side of
the cell.
Telophase
• Chromosomes begin
to uncoil and return to
chromatin.
• Membrane begins to
form around the new
nucleus.
Cytokinesis
• Cell pinches in two,
dividing the cytoplasm
and organelles in it
evenly between the
2 new cells.
