Which equation best predicted your calorie requirements when compared to the nutrient
analysis and how large was the range of estimates?
While calculating my caloric needs using several different equations to predict my
estimated requirements, I found that the Owen equation was the best predictor of my caloric
needs when compared to my nutrient analysis using Diet Analysis Plus. The Owen equation
estimated my necessary kilocalorie requirement to be 1226.63 kilocalories. However, when
assessing my caloric needs using the Diabetic Exchange List, the Mifflin St. Jeor predicted my
caloric requirements best, with a calculation of 1076.89. While assessing my caloric intake using
several equations to predict the necessary amount of kilocalories to maintain my weight, I was
able to establish a range between 1076.89 kilocalories to 1374.38 kilocalories. This
demonstrated a 297.49 kilocalorie difference between all equations. Diet Analysis Plus
calculated my 24- hour recall caloric intake to be 1219 k calories while the Caloric exchange list
estimated my 24- hour recall intake to be 990 kilocalories. When evaluating my selfassessment I was surprised by how close all of the equations were to my actual caloric intake in
one day.
