Fifth planet from the Sun
Jupiter is the first of the gas
giants. It has no surface. It
is a giant cloud of hydrogen
and helium held together by
gravity.
Jupiter has its own strange
weather. The clouds that
make up Jupiter are swirling
around it at 322 km/hr. The
Great Red Spot is such a
Storm.
Jupiter is so large it can be
seen without a telescope. It
is so large 1300 Earths could
fit inside it.
Its year equals 12 Earth years.
Jupiter is the supreme God of the
Roman religion. Many of Jupiter’s
moons are named after Jupiter’s
daughters. Many believe the Romans
named it after their supreme God
because it is the largest planet in
the sky.
This giant planet is like a mini
Solar System. It has at least 16
moons.
Sixth planet from the Sun
Just like Jupiter, Saturn
is made of hydrogen and
helium. Unlike Jupiter, it
has a liquid core. It is 10
times larger than Earth.
Saturn’s rings are made up
of billions of snowballs.
The gaps between the rings
Are caused by Saturn’s
many moons circling the
planet.
One year on Saturn equals
29.5 Earth years.
Saturn, God of agriculture, is the
father of Jupiter. However, he is
known for bringing civilization
and government to the Romans
through agriculture. He was
worshipped during the winter
festival, Saturnalia. Saturday was
also named after him.
Seventh planet from the Sun
Uranus has a unique bluegreen color. This is because
the planet’s atmosphere is
made up of methane gas, along
with hydrogen and helium. It
also has a core of melted rock.
Uranus is 5 times larger than
Earth. A year on Uranus equals
84 Earth years.
Uranus is father of Saturn,
father of Cyclops, monster
with a single eye on his
forehead and 3 creatures
100 eyes, 100 arms and 50
heads. He also fathered the
Titans.

Eight planet from the Sun
Neptune has a liquid rock
core. Above that is a layer of
ice. This ice changes often into
hydrogen, helium and methane.
The methane gives it its blue color.
A year on Neptune equals 165 Earth
Years.
Triton, Neptune’s largest moon
was the last solid object photographed by the probe, Voyager
before it left the Solar System.
Geysers were found erupting.
Neptune was the God of the sea.
He carried a 3 pronged trident
Which is his fishing spear. He
rode a dolphin as his horse.
Sailors prayed to Neptune for
a safe voyage.
Neptune was also the God of
earthquakes. He was named
“Earth Shaker”. Neptune is
also the God of horses.
Ninth planet from the Sun
Not much is know about Pluto.
It is the only planet that has not
been explored. Therefore,
scientists only know that it is
very cold. They believe it is
a mixture of rock and ices.
The ices are thought to be made
of methane.
Its year equals 248 Earth years.
It has one moon, Charon.
Pluto is God of the Underworld.
He is brother to Jupiter and
Neptune. Jupiter took control of
the Heavens, Neptune the Oceans,
so the Underworld was the only
place left for Pluto to rule.
Scientists believe he the planet was
named after him because Pluto is
always in darkness.
