Geography Unit Project Guidelines
Class Atlas
Objective: Students will create a class atlas set. Each student will pick a country to research
(using at least 1 library book and online resources) and create their own atlas. Students will
research a country using the following guidelines:
Learning Target 1: Include three of the six (one hand drawn) following maps - political,
physical, topographic map, globe, aerial photographs, and satellite images of your
country
 Include a map that shows which continent your country is part of.
 Include captions for each of your three maps (Figure Number, Caption, Internal
Citation).
 Write a well-developed paragraph explaining and interpreting what your three
maps show. Refer to your figures.
Learning Target 2: Use a map illustrate the following information: distance, scale,
patterns in climate and land use, and identify the population density.

Learning Target 3: Identify and explain two natural resources produced in your country
using illustrations and a well-developed paragraph.
Learning Target 4: Identify short term and long term physical changes that occur in
your country and the effects that they have using illustrations and a well-developed
paragraph.
Learning Target 5: Describe the movement of people, ideas, diseases and products
through your country using illustrations and a well-developed paragraph.
Learning Target 6: Describe and illustrate ways that people in this region interact with
their physical environment through vocational and recreational activities.
Learning Target 7: Describe and illustrate buildings and decorations from your country
and how these reflect the cultural values and ideas of people of the country.
Learning Target 8: Identify a major discovery in science and technology that have been
developed in your country and the social and economic effects these have had on the
physical and human environment in your country, using illustrations and a welldeveloped paragraph.
Learning Target 9: Give an example of a cause and consequence of current global
issue and how it is a problem in your country. Using illustrations and a well-developed
paragraph to explain how is the country dealing with the issue. (ie.: consumption of
natural resources).
