1st Grade Information!
Classroom Management
Rules:
Raise your hand when you want to talk.
Hands, feet and bodies to ourselves.
Be a good listener and pay attention.
Use walking feet in the building.
Follow directions the first time.
Always follow the GOLDEN RULE!
Individual: The students all have assigned numbers in the class. Behind my
desk is a behavior chart. They start everyday on “Rockin.” If they are not
following the classroom rules they first move their number to “Time for and a
Tune Up” which means they will not have their extra afternoon recess. If they
are still deciding to not follow the rules they move their number to “Whoa!
You’re Off Key” which is no recess and a note or phone call to the parent.
Misbehavior:
1. Verbal Warning
2. Move their number
3. Logical Consequences (i.e. if they disrupt group time they will leave
the group and sit at their desk)
4. Loss of recess and parent call/note
5. Continued misbehavior will lead to a visit to the principal
Good Behavior:
1. Happy parent call or happy note home. 
Whole Group:
1. When the class as a whole does a good job throughout the week they
will get to have Stinky Feet Friday (they get to leave their shoes off
while in the classroom all day).
Agendas
We use our agenda to record our homework, the number of cubes we ended the day with
and communications from the teacher or parent. You will sign/initial it each evening on the
yellow box. The students will bring them back each day along with their blue take home
folders.
Curriculum
Daily 5: (Literacy)
1
The Daily 5 is a literacy workshop developed by Boushey and Moser. Every day the
students will have 5 independent literacy centers to choose from. The five areas of practice
are read to self, read with a buddy, listen to reading, writing, and word study. Students will be
working independently during this time on the activities of the Daily 5 while I work with
students in small groups or one on one to assess progress and encourage growth in literacy
skills.
Guided Reading:
Everyday Mrs. Carroll, who is a Reading Specialist and Mrs. Whitman, who teaches
our English Language Learners will be coming into our classroom to work with small guided
reading groups. I will also be working with a small group during this time. Students will be
working on comprehension skills, word patterns and reading fluently. Materials will be
chosen from children’s literature books and our Fountas and Pinnell phonics series lessons.
Together we will work as partners in teaching the students to become better readers.
Word Wall Words (WWW):
During this time the students have the opportunity to explore sight words, we call them
word wall words. Your child will bring these words home every Monday in their agenda. In
class they will be writing the words and doing word wall activities on a daily basis. I can’t
stress the importance of learning these sight words. By reviewing these words with your child,
you can help them develop their basic reading vocabulary.
Word Patterns:
We will not be studying specific spelling words this year. We will be studying spelling
patterns. There will not be a weekly spelling test.
Here are some examples of the spelling patterns that we will be working on.
Beginning and ending consonants
Short vowels
Consonant digraphs (this, ship, which, chip)
Consonant blends (blend, stick, skip)
Long vowel pattern (bike, snake, kite)
Other vowel patterns (sail, meet, shout)
Inflected endings (sitting, marched, sings)
Handwriting:
Letter formation and daily writing will consist of the Ball and Stick handwriting method.
We will spend time in the beginning of the year learning how to form each letter correctly.
Writers Workshop:
We will be using the Lucy Caulkins book for writer’s workshop. This program incorporates a
variety of texts and writing genres. Your child will create a writing portfolio every month. At
the end of the month your child will choose one writing piece they want to improve. These
will be our “published” pieces.
2
We will also be working from the Write One writing program. This program provides a
variety of writing opportunities with the necessary training to enable each student to be a
successful writer. Please encourage your child that they are already great writers!
Math:
Students will be engaged in activities from our McGraw-Hill math series Everyday Math.
This math series contains many hands-on activities that will help them better understand the
concepts. Concepts such as numeral writing to 20, graphing, problem solving, addition,
subtraction, place value, time, and money will be explored this year. To solidify the math
concepts, the Everyday Math series incorporates a variety of games and activities that should
be practiced at home as well as at school.
Foreign Language:
The children will participate in Spanish lessons this year through group discussions,
videos and activities.
Social Studies/Science/Health:
In social studies we will be studying our five senses, family, friends, community, world,
and holidays. Our science series will allow the children to explore changes and weather.
Our health curriculum covers basic health issues such as: our bodies, food, drugs and
medicine, teeth, feeling, the five senses and safety.
Home Reading Program:
Please read with your child every night for 20 minutes. You can take turns reading,
have your child read the pictures, or have them retell a story you have read.
Birthday
Join us in celebrating your child’s special day. On your child’s birthday, they may bring a
cake, cupcakes, or any other store bought treat (no balloons, favors, etc.). The school asks
that we keep this a small recognition and not have a “party”. We will celebrate around 3:00
p.m. Summer birthdays will be celebrated in May. Please contact me before bringing a
birthday treat to confirm the day and time. According to school policy, if you send birthday
invitations out, there must be one for every boy, if it’s a boy party, and one for every girl, if it’s
a girl party. Thanks for your understanding in this matter. Please refer to the student
handbook if you need further information. ALWAYS KEEP IN MIND THAT WE ARE A
PEANUT FREE CLASSROOM; THEREFORE, NO PEANUT PRODUCTS ARE ALLOWED.
Trojan of the Week
To better acquaint our class with one another, every child will have the opportunity to tell
about themselves in a poster during the Trojan of the Week program. Please send in a poster
displaying your child’s family, friends, pets, interests, hobbies, favorite books and/or sports
etc. These do not have to be photos. Drawings, postcards, magazine pictures, etc., can be
used too. This is your child’s project, so please do not complete it for them. You may assist
with the spelling but let them do their writing. The poster will be on display for one week.
