2. POSITION SUMMARY
Located within the School of Public Health at the University of Alberta, the School-Based Intervention
Research though Changes in lifestyles and Environments (SIRCLE) research group, in collaboration with
the Population Health Intervention Research Unit (PHIRU) conducts research related to nutrition,
lifestyle, socio-economic factors and intervention programs to influence new health policies and
programs for chronic disease prevention. The overarching objective of our research is to advise on and
direct new health policies and population intervention programs to prevent chronic disease, to improve
quality of life and to avoid healthcare costs associated with the treatment of chronic diseases. Sample
projects include APPLE Schools, REAL Kids Alberta, CLASS II, and the Healthy Schools - Healthy Future
project, which builds upon the successes of APPLE Schools.
The Research Coordinator, Knowledge Exchange is a senior level position responsible for contributing to
both research activities and the associated knowledge exchange for the Healthy Schools – Healthy
Future (HSHF) project. The Research Coordinator, Knowledge Exchange will work closely with the PI to
develop, implement and evaluate a research and knowledge exchange framework for HSHF.
3. RESPONSIBILITIES/ACTIVITIES: Group activities into categories and list in point form each

General Activities
 This position is a senior level position located within a collaborative research environment.
As such, the Research Coordinator, Knowledge Exchange will lead the activities listed below,
and will consult with the PI and research team as appropriate.
Research Activities (60%)
 Conducts research with direction from the PI
 In collaboration with the research team, develops and implements a comprehensive
framework for evaluating HSHF
 Work with HSHF schools, and staff to inform and continuously improve research capacity
 Contributes to the writing of protocols, grant applications, etc.
 Develop presentations, reports, research papers and publications based on research results
 Contributed to the submission of manuscripts and grant applications
 Carries out data analyses (qualitative and quantitative)

Coordinates research meetings and fosters communications with the research team,
practitioners, the project steering committee
Develops a measurable, goal oriented strategy for the dissemination of research findings to
stakeholders
Stakeholders Knowledge Exchange (40%)














Develops comprehensive knowledge exchange strategies to ensure that research is
translated back to schools as part of the cycle: 1) implementation, 2) conduct research and
provide results back to school communities, and 3) adapt the intervention
Effectively uses multiple, audience-specific methods of communication and information
sharing for all stakeholders, including researchers, policymakers and practitioners
Identifies and leads consultations with key stakeholders including community partners,
policymakers, practitioners and health services representatives to share information, identify
stakeholder needs in using research evidence to inform comprehensive school health, and
solicits feedback on appropriate knowledge exchange products, tools or activities
Leads collaboration efforts with stakeholders to negotiate creative, practical and relevant
Decides on appropriate knowledge exchange tools to inform policy and program
development in the field
Documents and disseminates results of stakeholder consultations back to the research team
and participates in authoring strategies to further expand the impact of the team's research
activities
Works with a variety of partners to share ideas and promote school health in Alberta
Engages all HSHF schools into the conversation and implementation of CSH
Communicates with provincial and national partners dedicated to building healthy school
communities
Shares and supports school health information that increases awareness and knowledge of
innovative projects influencing CSH
Develops knowledge exchange tools to assist with project (i.e., implementation references,
other print materials, web-based modules or visual presentations)
Constructs and maintains schedule to accommodate meetings, interviews and travel while
adhering to the timelines of project and the concurrent objectives of the research team
Monitors activities and provides regular progress reports to the PI
Identifies barriers to successful knowledge translation and employs strategic problem solving
to circumvent them and revise objectives

4. KNOWLEDGE: Identify the minimum formalized training/education and/or qualifications
required to prepare an individual to be functional in the position.
Post-secondary education - minimum of a Master’s degree in a health or related discipline (e.g. public
health, nutrition, physical education, psychology, knowledge translation, etc.)
5. INDEPENDENCE OF ACTION: Describe the initiative required, the creativity and original
thought, and also the amount of direction and control received from the supervisor or standard
practices and precedents.
A. What types of decisions are made independently?
This position is expected to be a senior level position which can work quite independently, but within a
collaborative environment. The individual in this position is expected to lead the following activities with
direction from the PI:
 Develop a comprehensive evaluation and knowledge exchange framework for CSH within HSHF
 Develop data collection and analysis protocols and oversee all activities
 Mentor junior staff and graduate students working within SIRCLE
B. For what actions is it necessary to consult someone? Are approvals or instructions verbal or in
writing?
While much of the work is conducted independently, the PI and research team will be consulted
prior to major project milestones (data collection, scientific publications and formal knowledge
exchange activities).
6. CONSEQUENCE OF ERRORS: Identify the extent of losses which result from mistakes in
judgment or poor decisions (typical instances, not rare or extreme ones), and the responsibility
for safety of others.
Inappropriate or erroneous communications could result in a loss of reputation and/or damaged
relationships for the project among members of the funding body, the partner organizations,
and/or the public. This could potentially result in a loss of funding.

HSHF team
SIRCLE Staff (Storey 'lab') - the position overlaps with the PHIRU and SIRCLE units and as such,
the staff member will be responsible for working collaboratively with SIRCLE Staff and
mentoring more junior staff members
APPLE Schools Manager, APPLE Schools Regional Coordinators and School Health Facilitators
PHIRU Manager, Financial Assistant and Administrative Assistant - contacts regarding
administrative and financial processes within the unit
REAL Kids Alberta project staff - works collaboratively with these staff in order to ensure a
holistic approach to evaluating HSHF is created

to promote and implement interventions, research and dissemination on issues related to
