6th Grade
Summer Writing Project
Dear Parents and Students,
School is out and summer is here! To help our students keep their skills
sharp over the summer break, we have created a summer writing project. This
project will be due on Monday, August 17th and will be counted as the first test
grade in Language Arts. It is imperative for your child to complete this assignment
in a timely manner. These journals will be displayed during our annual Parent Night,
so please make plans to come by and see them. If your child is currently attending
C.A.S.A., we will organize these journals before the last day of school. If you are new
to C.A.S.A., please feel free to email your questions to Mrs. Funk at:
funke@christianacademysa.org.
1. You will need to purchase a wide ruled composition notebook with 100
pages.
- Decorate the notebook by placing a picture of yourself on the front cover.
- Write or draw your name on the front cover.
- Please be creative and decorate your journal in a way that fits your
personality.
- Please DO NOT glue secular pictures on your journal.
- Pictures should only be of you, your family, or labels of food items that you
enjoy eating. We will use this journal all year, so have fun with it!
2. Number all of your pages, front and back, on the top right/left corner. For
example, the very first page would be page 1 and the back of that page will be
page 2. When you have finished numbering, you should have numbered a
total of 200 pages.
3. Next, divide the notebook into four sections. Page 1 will be your Table of
Contents and page two will be left blank. List the following categories on
page 1 under the Table of Contents title:
Maps and Craft- pages 3-50
Reflections- pages 51-71
Words and Phrases- pages 72-112
Writing Genres - pages 113-200
4. Place tabs on the first page of every section. This will help you find your
categories easier. Also, be sure to title and date every page.
5. You are required to make two entries in each section. Feel free to use various
colors for your entries. However, please refrain from using markers. We
don’t want ink to bleed through.
6. Remember! This will be your first test grade for the first nine weeks. 
Section 1: Maps and Craft
God wants us to be good planners, and everything we do must be well thought
out. This is where we will create maps and lists to help us brainstorm new ideas.
“For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the
cost, whether he has enough to complete it?” Luke 14:28
Entry #1 on page 3: I Am
View the image for the “I Am” poem on our website. On page 3, paste a picture of
yourself in the center of the paper. Next, draw, paste pictures, or complete a
sentence next to the following statements:
I am…
I see…
I won…
I hear…
I know God is…
I went…
I want to meet…
I wonder if Jesus will…
I ate…
Entry #2 on page 5: 50 Things
Using as many colors as possible, write 50 things that you enjoy or love. You may
write these items in BIG font or CRAZY font. Be creative!
Section 2: Reflections
In this section, we will reflect on ways God is moving in our lives at school or at
home. “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with
all your strength.” Deuteronomy 6:5
Entry number 1 & 2: Find two photos that you really love. Write a reflection
describing the moments in the pictures. What is it about? Who’s in it? Why is it
important to you? Use one photo per reflection.
Entry #1 will start on p. 51.
Entry #2 will continue on p.53.
Section 3: Words and Phrases
God expects us to use words that are uplifting and encouraging to one another.
This section will help build our vocabulary skills for everyday conversation. We
will write words from the dictionary, spelling book, and our bible. “Do not let any
unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building
others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” Ephesians
4:29
Entry #1 on page 71: Choose your favorite sport. Once you have chosen your sport,
write down at least five words or terms that are used in this sport, define these
words, and then draw a picture to clarify the meaning. For example, my favorite
sport is baseball. One word they say a lot in baseball is STRIKE! I would write the
word strike, define it, and then draw a picture of a baseball player striking out. I’m
not expecting you to be a professional artist, but I want you to use your creative
imagination. If you need more clarification, please visit our website.
Entry #2 on page 73: Write a word or phrase, as big as you can, that best describes
you. In three to four sentences, explain why you think God has created you this way.
Color your word or phrase.
Section 4: Writing Genres
Had it not been for great writers, we wouldn’t have our Holy Bible. God used us
(humans) to write his teachings for all to see and live by. In this section, we will
practice different types of writing that include: Informatory Writing, Personal
Narrative, Persuasive Writing, or Expository Writing. “For everything that was
written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in
the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.” Romans
15:4
Entry #1 on page 111: Persuasive Writing
You will need to write two paragraphs for the following topic. Also, don’t forget to
create a title for your persuasive essay and write it on the top line of your paper.
Topic: What extracurricular activities or specials would you like to add at C.A.S.A.?
Consider the following questions when writing your essay:
How would it help our school?
Would this activity help with bullying?
Will it help bring students closer to God?
Will it build their character and confidence?
Entry #2 on page 113: Personal Narrative Writing
You will need to write two paragraphs for the following prompt.
Prompt: Write about your most memorable moment you’ve had this summer. Please
be sure to include as many details as possible. You may also include photos or
artifacts that you have collected for this memory. For example: tickets to a concert
or movie, game tickets, brochure, plane voucher, etc.
Where did you go?
Why is this memory so memorable?
What was your favorite part about this memory?
How did it end?
Once you’ve completed two entries in every category, you are finished! We are so
excited to see the finished product of all your hard work.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Funk
