What are the functions of the nervous
system?

What is a neuron?

Summarize the path of a nerve impulse.

Form a hypothesis – will you be able to react
more quickly using your eyes or your ears?

Functions:
1. Receive information from both inside and
outside the body.
2. Direct body responses.
3. Maintain homeostasis.
neuron – cells that carry information through
your nervous system
nerve impulse – the “message” that a neuron
(nerve cell) carries.

Parts of a neuron:
1. cell body – the part of the neuron that contains
the nucleus.
2. dendrites – thread-like extensions that RECEIVE
the nerve impulse.
3. axon – structure that carries the nerve impulse
AWAY from the neuron.
4. synapse – the gap between one neuron and
another.
