Lesson 5: Mormon 7-9
Lesson 5: Mormon 7-9
Day 1: Read Mormon 7
This is the last chapter Mormon wrote in the Book of Mormon. Though his son Moroni
goes on to add some more of his father’s words to the plates (a sermon and a letter written
earlier by his father), chapter 7 was the last thing Mormon himself entered into the record
before his death.
1.
a) Who does Mormon address his final words to?
b) Name at least three things that Mormon says these people should remember or
do, when they get this record?
2. In verse 9, Mormon speaks of two records, “this” record, and “that” record.
a) Match the following:
1. “This” record
A. The Bible
2. “That” record
B. The Book of Mormon
b) Fill in the blanks to expand and explain the meaning of verse 9.
“This (The ________) is written for the intent ye may believe that (The ______ __
_________); and if ye believe that (The ________) ye will believe this (The ______ __
__________) also; and if ye believe this (The _______ __ _________), ye will know concerning your fathers, and also the marvelous works which were wrought by the power of
God among them.”
3. a) Why do you think that Mormon wants his Lamanite readers to “come to a knowledge
of your fathers”? (Verses 1,5,9) Isn’t it enough to accept the gospel of Jesus Christ in
modern times without knowing your own past history?
B) PONDERING: Why do you think it is important for any people or any individual
to know the history of your own ancestors?
4. PERSONAL: Are there any “marvelous works which were wrought by the power of
God” in your own family history that sffected your faith through their inclusion in written
records (journals)?
Day 2: Mormon 8:1-13
5. Some scholars think that Moroni originally planned to close the record at verse 13, giving a quick explanation of what had befallen his father and the other Nephites. What would
have been the conditions of Moroni’s life at this point and what was his focus in these first
13 verses of Mormon 8?
6. How many chapters does Moroni add to the Book of Mormon, whether by translating
and editing the book of Ether or in his own book of Moroni. Is it: a) 17 b) 20 or c) 27

Day 3: Read Mormon 8:14-25
7. What phrase do you find repeated in the first three verses of this section (14, 15, 16)
that show Moroni has switched his focus to the future?
8. Moroni is turning his attention in this section to what great event that the Lord has
shown him is coming in the future?
9. See D&C 10:46-50. (Scripture List follows) How important were the prayers of Book of
Mormon prophets and disciples in shaping the future?
b. Do you think we, through our faith, can leave a blessing on future generations?
Explain.
Day 4: Read Mormon 8:26-41 Moroni says he is speaking to a generation in the future
that Christ has shown him. “I speak to you as if ye were present,” he says. LDS scholar
Richard Bushman says of this section, “Moroni is looking us in the eye.”
11. Name some things that he says will be characteristic of the churches of the time when
the Book of Mormon comes forth. Cite verses.
12. A striking phrase of Moroni’s is “great pollutions.” The dictionary defines pollution as a
harmful substance introduced into the environment. What are some of the spiritual pollutions he refers to?
13. What can you do to protect and defend yourself and loved ones against these pitfalls
of the last days?
Day 5: Mormon 9:1-21
14. Moroni first directs his attention in this chapter to atheists. What is going to happen
that will shock the unbelievers out of their faithlessness?
15. Moroni then turns his attention to the “half-believers” he sees in our day. (Start in v.7)
a) What is their objection to the coming forth of the Book of Mormon?
b. What is Moroni’s answer to the critics who say this?

Lesson 5: Mormon 7-9
16. If there are no miracles (in a church, a family, a life) what is the reason? Cite verse.
Day 6: Read Mormon 9:22-37
17. Verses 22-24 are an exact reprise of what Jesus told his disciples in Jerusalem just
before he left them. (See Mark 16:16-18 in Scripture List)
a) In his final words, what does Jesus say to his disciples about miracles?
a) Moroni seems to want to remind Christ’s followers in our day to continue to have
faith in miracles in spite of the world’s opposition. Have you ever experienced one of
these particular miracles that Jesus promised would follow true faith in him? Explain.
18. Verse 31 pleads with modern readers not to condemn the Book of Mormon for its “imperfections.”
a) If we discern imperfections, what does Moroni say we should we do?
b) How would this also be a good model for responding to the faults or imperfections we perceive in family members, ward members, or church leaders?
19.
a) What do you think Moroni means when he says he, and others, have written to
rid their garments of the blood of their brethren, who have dwindled in unbelief?
b) Book of Mormon authors mention this more than once. See 2 Nephi 9:44 in the
scripture list. Do we ourselves need to worry about this principle?
20. Is there anything that particularly touched you from the chapters of this lesson that you
would like to share?
Scriptures for Lesson 5: Mormon 7-9
D&C 10:46-50 And, behold, all the remainder of this work does contain all those parts of
my gospel which my holy prophets, yea, and also my disciples, desired in their prayers
should come forth unto this people. 47 And I said unto them, that it should be granted unto

them according to their faith in their prayers; 48 Yea, and this was their faith—that my
gospel, which I gave unto them that they might preach in their days, might come unto their
brethren the Lamanites, and also all that had become Lamanites because of their dissensions. 49 Now, this is not all—their faith in their prayers was that this gospel should be
made known also, if it were possible that other nations should possess this land; 50 And
thus they did leave a blessing upon this land in their prayers, that whosoever should believe in this gospel in this land might have eternal life;
Mark 16:16-18 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not
shall be damned. 17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they
cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; 18 They shall take up serpents; and if
they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them: they shall lay hands on the sick, and
they shall recover.
2 Nephi 9:44 O, my beloved brethren, remember my words. Behold, I take off my garments, and I shake them before you; I pray the God of my salvation that he view me with
his all-searching eye; wherefore, ye shall know at the last day, when all men shall be
judged of their works, that the God of Israel did witness that I shook your iniquities from my
soul, and that I stand with brightness before him, and am rid of your blood.
