Earth Science Lesson Plans
Week of October 14, 2013
Learning Target: I can understand what is involved to create a weather forecast.
Standard: Structure of Earth System: Using the science themes during investigations, describe climate, weather,
ocean currents, soil movements, and changes in the forces acting on the earth
Starter: Daily Science: Big Idea 3, Week 4 Day 1
Monday
Tasks:
1.
Introduce myself… debrief from my return- review expectations and procedures.
*have students create name plates
2.
In the Catastrophic Events Student Guide read about meteorologist Bob Ryan in “What’s in the
Forecast?” pages 50-53.
3.
Discuss the techniques that Bob uses to collect data.
4. Review what does the rest of the week looks like.
Independent Practice:
Closure: Ticket out: Write down 2 questions that you might ask Bob in order to find out more about his career.
Learning Target: I can explain what happens to two air masses when they meet.
Standard: Structure of Earth System: Using the science themes during investigations, describe climate, weather,
Tuesday
ocean currents, soil movements, and changes in the forces acting on the earth
Starter: Daily Science: Big Idea 3, Week 4 Day 2
Tasks: (Einstein Kit – Lesson 5: Convection Currents in the Air)
1.
Read aloud pages 72 – 75 in the Weather and Climate text.
2.
Notes- on lose leaf create Air Masses chart and fill in
3.
Allow time to complete questions 1 – 15 on the Air Masses and Fronts worksheet.
Independent Practice: Air Masses and Fronts: Review and Reinforce worksheet
Closure: Ticket out: (on sticky note) What happens to two air masses when they meet?
Learning Target: I can name the main types of fronts.
Standard: Structure of Earth System: Using the science themes during investigations, describe climate, weather,
ocean currents, soil movements, and changes in the forces acting on the earth
Wednesday
Starter: Daily Science: Big Idea 3, Week 4 Day 3
Tasks: ( Einstein Kit – Lesson 5: Convection Currents in the Air)
1.
Read aloud the Types of Fronts on pages 76 and 77 in the Weather and Climate text.
2.
DEMO: The teacher will demonstrate what happens when front forms using the lab Zone: Teacher
Demonstration on page 77 in the TE.
3.
Students will complete 8 – 12 on the worksheet given yesterday. Collect to record grades.
4. Identify 3 students who will be willing to complete the Discovery Activity on page 80 at the start of class
tomorrow.
Independent Practice: Air Masses and Fronts: Review and Reinforce worksheet
Closure: Ticket out: Name a type of front discussed in class today.
Learning Target: I can list the main kinds of storms and explain how they form.
Standard: Structure of Earth System: Using the science themes during investigations, describe climate, weather,
ocean currents, soil movements, and changes in the forces acting on the earth
Thursday
Starter: Daily Science: Big Idea 3, Week 4 Day 4
Tasks: (Einstein Kit – Lesson 6 – Temperature, Pressure, and Cloud Formation)
1.
Read aloud Storms and discuss on pages 80 – 89 in the Weather and Climate text.
Fill in Storms Chart (handout) as a class while reading.
2.
Students should complete the following questions in the Section Assessment on page 89, # 1-4
3.
3 students will be completing the discover activity on page 80 at the start of the class. Have them
explain and share the activity with the class
Independent Practice: Section Assessment on page 89 , # 1-4 – DUE TOMORROW!
Closure: Ticket out: Make a personal connection to what you learned about storms.
Learning Target:
I can explain how weather is predicted
Standard: Structure of Earth System: Using the science themes during investigations, describe climate, weather,
ocean currents, soil movements, and changes in the forces acting on the earth
Friday
Starter: Daily Science: Big Idea 3, Week 4 Day 5
Tasks: (Einstein Kit – Lesson 6 – Temperature, Pressure, and Cloud Formation)
