Determine the meaning of the new word formed when a known
affix is added to a known word (e.g. Agreeable/disagreeable,
comfortable/uncomfortable, care/careless, heat/preheat).
Watch YouTube video about affixes. Have students come up with
word that contain affixes. Write the words they come up with on
the white board.
In a class discussion the teacher and students will discuss word
with affixes. After the discussion students will display their
understanding by completing a word chart full of prefixes, root
words and suffixes, with 80% accuracy.
Before the lesson students will know about root words, suffixes
and prefixes.
1) Watch a YouTube video about affixes. 2) After watching the
video talk about some prefixes and suffixes that the students
have heard. 3) Type the affixes in a MS Word Document and also
the definition to the affixes next to them. 4) Next the teacher will
ask the students to come up with any words they know with
affixes (students may use their library book or dictionary) 5) Write
the words that the students come up with 6) Complete the four
column chart with the words the students come up with. The first
column is for prefixes, the second for the root word, the third is
the suffix and the last column is for the definition of the root
word. 7) Students are also writing down the four column chart in
their notebooks. 8) Students will return to their desk and
complete affix worksheet provided. 9) If there is extra time have
students write a story using words with affixes.
The teacher will model the activity on the document camera and
overhead projector.
Students will be able to tell the meaning of words based on the
affixes.

Students will compete affix worksheet provided. This activity will
take about 20-30 minutes.
Students will write a story (1-2 paragraphs) using affixes. Have
students underline affixes.
