Welcome!
This is a place where families can go to get important information about the classroom. I have
included my teaching philosophy, classroom rules and procedures, the daily schedule, and our
songs we sing in class. I have also chosen to post links to articles which support my philosophy
of teaching.
My Classroom – Bronfenbrenner’s Theory: bioecological systems theory
This theory looks at a child’s development within the context of the system of relationships that
form his or her environment. Bronfenbrenner’s theory defines complex “layers” of
environment, each having an effect on a child’s development (Bronfenbrenner, 1990). The
interaction between factors in the child’s maturing biology, his/her immediate family, the
community environment and the societal landscape creates the direction of his/her
development. Changes or conflicts in any one layer will have effects on each of the other layers.
To further a child’s positive development then, we must look not only at the child and her
immediate environment, but also at the interaction of the larger environment as well
(Paquette, 2001).
Classroom Rules and Procedures
The classroom rules and procedures are designed to promote and teach respect, safety and
responsibility. In addition, I break the school day into units and then I break those units into the
discrete behaviors that we need to teach our children in order to facilitate their success in the
classroom. To use the analogy of teaching literacy, if we have a student who is struggling to
read, we repeatedly provide direct instruction with lots of practice time for the child and plenty
of reinforcement when he or she reads correctly or correction when he or she doesn’t.
Research tells us that in behavior instruction we do the same thing. We repeatedly provide
direct instruction in one discrete behavior at a time providing lots of practice time for the child
and lots of reinforcement or correction to support learning. I use positive reinforcement more
than any other intervention in the classroom.
