A fairy tale is a type of short narrative that typically features folkloric characters and usually magic.
Originally, these types of stories were told around campfires, taverns and in medieval villages
where there were very few kids present. These stories were often violent in nature and served as a
source of entertainment. As their popularity spread, fairy tales came to have a major influence on
children’s literature. They have become heavy influences on movies, sitcoms, and advertisements.
A fractured fairy tale is when an author modernizes or change one or more of the elements of the
original story. These changes cause the story to be “fractured.
Assignment
You will be writing a fractured fairy tale. That is, you will be taking a pre- existing fairy tale and
altering the elements to create a newer and modernized version.
Specifics:

You must choose a pre- existing fairy tale (see the list below)
Your fractured fairy tale must use the originals existing characters, plot and theme
You can change the setting and point of view. You can also add elements that were not
present in the original story (new characters, magic, time period). You may add an
unexpected twist to the story. You may make the story more contemporary. You may add
additional conflict to the story.
Final copy must be 3-4 pages, double-spaced, typed, Times New Roman, Cambria or
Calibri font.
