BULAC board retreat and unity brunch event
by Rita Cidre
A couple of months ago an email popped up in my
inbox titled BULAC Annual Board Retreat. Board
Retreat. My mind immediately drifted to a cold,
corporate boardroom with no windows and watereddown coffee. I couldn’t have been more wrong!
In order to increase our online
presence, BULAC has issued out the
following challenge:
Latino GOLD
Spotlight!
Nick Donias ‘12
Lorena Garcia ‘12
The new regional page with the most
‘likes’ by Jan.1, 2013 will get some
Brown bookstore giveaways for their
next event!
Participating regions: Chicago,
Washington DC, Los Angeles,
Providence, and San Diego.
BULAC President’s
Welcome!
Saludos Latino Alumni! BULAC has
been busy planning an exciting
year of events and alumni
engagement just for you!
From the moment I set foot in the conference room of
Alyse’s apartment building in Miami, I knew I was right

2012-2013 Latino Heritage Series
This year’s theme, “Next Generation Latino: Exploring
Changing Paradigms in the Latino Community,” will
explore how Latinos have traditionally been portrayed in
modern culture and how they are breaking free from such
paradigms, according to LHS programmers Diana Garcia
’13, Holly Doerflinger ’13, and Carlos Aramayo ’14.
The series launched on Sept. 24th with a convocation
featuring the Chicago-based, all-female performance
troupe, Teatro Luna. Future events include an
immigration talk by an Arizona senator, and more cosponsored activities with the Latino Student Initiative, a
student-led team meaning to spark Latino initiatives on
campus. “Like” the BULAC-PVD Facebook page for more
updates on the series.
A message from the Director of the Third World Center
Greetings, Brown University alumni! As you know, throughout
the decades students of color have challenged the university to
re-conceptualize its efforts to promote inclusion, equity, and
social justice. Programs such as the Minority Peer Counselors,
ALANA Mentoring, and heritage series (formerly heritage
weekends, weeks, and months) continue to push the campus
community to support the access and success of
underrepresented and underserved groups.
As a premier pre-orientation program, the Third World
Transition Program (TWTP) welcomes over 220 students to
Brown, facilitates critical dialogues about
the intersections of various social
identities, and promotes communitybuilding across difference. In fact,
participants consistently identify TWTP
as one of the most pivotal programs they
took part in during their time on College
Hill.
On behalf of the Third World Center, I
extend my heartfelt appreciation for
making the TWTP Endowment a reality.
Your collective efforts and generous
support will ensure that future
generations of scholars and activists start
their time at Brown with a rich,
engaging,
and
transformative
experience. Moreover, this endowment
will allow us to expand the program to serve students in
various capacities for many years to come. The TWTP
endowment is a testament that great accomplishments are
made possible when alumni, students, staff, faculty, and
community members come together to serve the greater
good. Thank you!
All my best,
Mary Grace Almandrez
Director, Third World Center
and Assistant Dean of the College
