Fall Leadership Program 2012

The NV/CA Region’s Story
The NV/CA Region started in 1992 with 10
chapters.
It currently has 98 chapters.
California and Nevada wanted to form a region
because they knew they would grow
tremendously and did not want to be absorbed
into any other region.
Our first Regional
Coordinator was Judy Ryan from Fresno City
College who served the region until 2007.
In 1992, advisors from California and Nevada
got together to name the region. Some voted
that it should be named CA/NV Region since
California was the larger of the two states.
Others wanted to name it NV/CA Region since
California was always going to be bigger so this
would be Nevada's only chance of being first, or
on top if you will. Since there were an equal
number of advisors from California and Nevada
at this meeting, there was a tie. This went on
for hours until finally, Mike Hardie, from
Western Nevada College in Carson City, made
the compelling argument that we should be
called NV/CA Region contending that not only
would California always be larger than Nevada
in size but also in the numbers of chapters
since California had more colleges to start new
chapters. After a moment of silence, Brad
Reynolds, from College of the Canyons, decided
to change his vote from the CA/NV Region to
NV/CA Region. This is how we came to be
known as the NV/CA Region. Our Regional
Coordinator, Charlie Klein, was one of those
present at that fateful meeting.

The 2012 Phi Theta Kappa Honors Institute took place in
Denver, Colorado from June 18-23, 2012. It was an
incredible learning experience as much as it was an amazing
social experience. Throughout the week, we listened to
many speakers from different professions such as the NFL
and Journalism to share their views and insight on the
Culture of Competition in their respective fields. We were
then broken down into smaller groups - seminar groups - to
share thoughts on the speaker's topic. Outside of those
presentations and seminar discussions, we were free to
either participate in fun activities put on by the faculty such
as Family Feud, or explore the great city of Denver. Come
hear more about this extraordinary opportunity that will take
place next year in Pennsylvania, June 17-22, 2013.
