Biblical Pitch- (Task 2)
The film that I have come up with for this pitch is to do a black and white noir
styled re telling of the original story. I wasn’t interested in re-hashing the same
imagery that we’ve seen before in countless bible adaptations in film so I
decided to visually make the film almost un relatable visually from the original
story but carry over the characters and themes from the original story and
convert them to fit the genre of film I am going for.
The film will take black in dark city called ‘Israel’ and the version of Israel in this
film shows no resemblance to the real city it’s completely a fictional city just
with the same name to link it to the original story. There is a kingpin type
character called Goliath who is also the mayor of the city and has complete
control of all the gangs and law enforcements who is making the rich richer
and the poor poorer.
There is this one young man in his early twenties called David who lives in a
one-bedroom apartment in the suburbs of the city, he’s recently lost his job
and doesn’t have a lot of money. He decides to put on his only tux and head up
to the big casino where there is a game of poker with the mayor Goliath
himself who is a huge figure a 7-foot tall man with an intense deep voice who
looks like he could crush you at any second.
David manages to get to play in the game which on the public conscious is a
simple charity event but David knows like the rest of the people in Israel that’s
just a cover up for something much worse. The first game goes on as shown
through a quick montage and David loses but this girl with blonde tied up hair
comes in the room and gives David a check with enough money to stay in the
game and a montage is shown of David winning and beats Goliath and goes
home a rich man.
The film only has two main characters and they say very little dialogue
together. Most of the dialogue would be done as a voice over through the
David character expressing his thoughts. The goliath character won’t say much
but a lot of the emotion and fear would come from the characters facial
expressions and characteristics.
The target audience for the film is 12 and above but not necessarily 12 year
olds but they would just be able to see them film as the film wouldn’t contain
any violence or gore or any sex references really at all but that’s not to say a 12
year old wouldn’t enjoy it but there not the audience I have first in mind it’s
just anyone who would like it would specifically people with taste towards the
film noir genre.
The film overall would be inspired by films like ‘Casino Royale’ and ‘Sin City’ so
if you could imagine those films in a blender but throwing the bible in there I
think you would have an entertaining and weird mix that I believe would be
appealing to a certain audience. I did story boards to show key scenes in the
film.
David & Goliath Script
Long shot of the city of Israel at night with the sound of cars going by. Then we are in the
main character David’s bedroom with an unknown girl in his bed. He lays there in his bed
and listens to his thoughts.
David
Why, I ask myself how and why I got myself in this mess, no job, no love and no life. All I was
any good at was drinking, killing, smoking and most importantly poker. Not anything I’m
particularly proud off, well except for the poker.
You then see a montage a David and his friends playing different poker games.
David
Any decent money I’ve ever made was from poker, been playing it for years but never in any
of the big casinos in town, just the big games in the backstreets and with friends although
they didn’t stay my friends for very long when I’d end up winning all their money.
Then David is in his bathroom buttoning up his shirt and having a shave.
David
But hey I’m not a bad guy just had some bad luck.
David is driving in the dark.
David
This town hasn’t always been this bad; it’s only been like this since Goliath won the election
all those years ago, its remarkable he’s still mayor of this place. He’s run everyone out of
earning an honest living in this god forsaken town. He brags about being the best poker
player this side of the country and tonight he’s hosting a game at the top casino of Israel
and tonight we will find out who the best player is.
David then walks up to the casino and walks through the lobby and enters a room with a big
round table and mysterious shadowy figures at the bar.
Card Dealer
Would everyone like to please gather around the table, we are ready to play the game.
Goliath
I hope your all ready with you wallets hahaha.
Everyone gathers around the table and they start to play the game. A montage of them
playing goes by of David loosing but eventually he wins.
Goliath
How, what? You have made a big mistake young man.
David
I’m counting on it.
David then collects his winnings and walks out of the casino and then it fades to black.
