Care For Elderly
MAIN POINT/S
Care for the elderly is lacking in society.
Improved living standards,
Perception of elderly (old, useless)
Values like fillial piety have eroded due to
increased ‘Westernisation.’’

WE discard and purge from our minds everything we don't want
or need.
Tattered bags and clothes that are no longer in fashion. Baggage
from relationships past. Toxic Facebook "friends". Machiavellian
developments within political parties.
All these clutter the mind or space, and are best thrown out with the
rest of the day's refuse.
The same can be said for senior citizens. There have recently been
calls for the government to enact legislation to make it mandatory
for children to provide for their aged parents.
The reason: there is a growing "trend" among Malaysians to leave
their aged parents to fend for themselves or to dump them in old
folk’s homes, often without providing any form of assistance. There
have also been cases of sickly old folk being left at hospitals, bus
shelters and five-foot ways by their children.

aged parents.
This shows that taking care of the elderly
has been dismissed by the younger
generation and they are left neglected as a
result.

In our progressive society, many have the
ability to take of their aged parents
(elderly); it just a matter of whether they
are willing to or not.
These are shocking. And a damning testament to what we have
become.
Whatever has happened to filial responsibility, a core value of Asian
culture? Have we become automatons consumed by our careerchasing lives?
Or have modern living, dual income families, and the diminished
role of the extended family, made it difficult, or even impossible,
for children to care for their aged parents?
Every family may have its own unique set of problems, but while
there are some children who really cannot afford to provide for their
parents, there are many who can take care of their parents with
some adjustments to their lifestyles. They are just not willing to.
Examples:
1) Whatever has happened to filial
responsibility, a core value of Asian
culture? Have we become automatons
consumed by our career- chasing lives?
It is like a rhetorical question asked here.
Are we really so concern with our career
lives that we can’t be concerned with taking
care of the elderly? Or are we just using our
career- chasing lives as excuses to shirk this
responsibility?
2) But while there are some children who
really cannot afford to provide for their
parents, there are many who can take care
of their parents with some adjustments to
their lifestyles. They are just not willing to.

Various other suggestions have also been made,
including that day care centres be set up for the aged,
that people be encouraged to save for their twilight
years, and that hospital fees for old people be waived.

But more important than
all these is a change in our
attitude towards the aged.
But more important than all these is a change in our
attitude towards the aged. In such youth-obsessed times,
it has become easy, even natural, to dismiss our elders as
nothing but doddering irritations.
They ought not to be perceived as decrepit, burdensome
beings to be cloistered away in dank dungeons, or cast
away in boats with sufficient rations for a week.
Instead, they should be treated as the wellsprings of
experience and knowledge that they are. They have
lived lives vivid and full, and can impart much. They
have, after all, filled in the colours on the canvas of
many lives. (Some also look far better than many half
their age).

We provide opportunities for all,
according to their ability and effort. We
have confidence in our future.
Everyone ,regardless of age, should be
allowed a chance to showcase their potential.
In this case, including elderly. As stated
earlier in the article, senior citizens (elderly)
who have the capabilities should be offered
the chance to provide for themselves.
Though, their children ought to be
responsible for their care, it should not be
their sole responsibility.
