REGULAR CALLED CITY COUNCIL MEETING
Tuesday, June 2, 2015 – 5:00 P.M.
Boulders Conference Center – Denison, Iowa
The first regular City Council Meeting of the City of Denison, Iowa was held pursuant to law on the above date
and hour; Mayor Pro-tem Leinen called the meeting to order at 5:00 p.m. with the following members present:
AHART, DESY, LEINEN, RODRIGUEZ absent: MAYOR BONNER, MAHRT
Motion Ahart/Rodriguez to approve the agenda. Ayes: 4 Motion carried.
Motion Desy/Ahart to approve the following items on the consent agenda: a) approve and waive the reading of the
minutes for 5/19/2015; b) approve the bills as presented; c) approve PCE #5 for Sioux Contractors for City Hall Renovation;
d) approve PCE #6 for Carley Construction for 2014 Streets; e) approve PCE #20 –final for Carley Construction for 2012
Streetscaping; f) approve liquor licenses for Kimmes Denison Country Store and Cronk’s Café; g) approve tobacco license
for Kimmes Denison Country Store – June; h) approve tobacco license renewals effective 7-1-15 for Casey’s General Store,
Fareway Stores Inc., Hy-Vee Food Store, Hy-Vee Wine & Spirits; Kimmes Denison Country Store, La Estrella, Pronto of
Denison, Sparky’s One Stop and Wal-Mart. Ayes: 4 Motion carried.
Dept. Head Reports: Snowgren emailed his report to Council and reported that DMU stopped to do energy conservation
evaluation. Emswiler reported that biannual EMS training completed. Still taking donations for K-9 unit and there will be a
pasta supper Friday from 4-7 p.m. at Hy-Vee with all proceeds going to the K-9 program. Emswiler applied for a grant for
body cameras. Police dept. changing uniform pants, effective July 1st. Ordering new equip for new car. In 2 weeks officer
Melby will be on his own. On Wed. Emswiler and Snowgren going to Sac County to look at CAD system. Wiebers reported
that public works has been cutting trees, patching holes, fixed 2 undermines, and have mowed 2 properties for code
enforcement. Wally reported summer reading program began June 1st. County drug dog coming to library on Friday, June
9th, for a program. Library is having a new server installed.
Update on goals: Desy – Park/Rec Board- Now have all the board members in place. Will be meeting with Kempfert, Koch
& Wiebers to discuss program. Have hired 2 people to help Master Gardeners. Ahart – Hwy Corridors – Team Ford
acquired another building on Hwy 30 and cleaning up that corner. Checking into used car lots that seem to be popping up
all over. Leinen – Performance Based Pay – Region XII has started receiving surveys back regarding wages. The handbook is
almost complete and ready for council review. Rodriguez – Abandoned and dilapidated properties – Has a couple more
agencies to contact.
Mayor Report: None.
City Manager Report: Crawford reported that the drywall is done on main floor, windows starting on N. side, and roof top
units in place on city hall remodel project. PCE brings project 35% complete. Looking at possible street repairs using the
additional $.10 gas tax money. N. 20th St. more extensive than thought, so will just replace worst areas. Oakpark Blvd. & N.
Settlers Lane need patched. Rough estimate $100,000 for all 3 streets. We are having problems at the compost site. Metal
has been dumped a couple of times and went through Krajicek grinder. Also getting excessive amounts of grass. Contact
media to go over rules again. Cameras have been ordered to monitor compost site and fire training facility. Phil’s will start
spraying the hillside soon. The wildflowers are dying back and the thistles are really showing.
PUBLIC FORUM – none.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 5:25 p.m.
