VISION FOR STRENGTHENING TRANSPORTATION’S ROLE IN A
CLEAN-ENERGY FUTURE
Speakers will present holistic views of how various renewable energy, energy
efficiency and urban planning policies and tools can be used to move the APEC
region towards a low-energy, low-carbon, sustainable transport future. The
discussion will focus on fuel efficiency and fuel switching measures to cut the
region’s reliance on oil imports and reduce the region’s carbon emissions.

FOR LIVABLE LOW-CARBON COMMUNITIES
Low-carbon communities are being developed throughout the APEC region with
a wide range of experience to share. Transportation-related aspects of livability
will be discussed, such as Transit-Oriented Development (TOD), expansion of Bus
Rapid Transit (BRT) and mass transit corridors, and development of bike paths
and walkways. Potential for livable communities to reduce energy use and
carbon emissions will be highlighted.

POWERING LOW-CARBON TRANSPORT –
ELECTRICITY, BIOFUELS AND NATURAL GAS
Participants will identify opportunities for the development and promotion of
environmentally sustainable biofuels, natural gas and electric drive vehicles to
reduce reliance on petroleum fuel for transport. They will also note key barriers
to the expanded use of biofuels, gas and electric drive vehicles and necessary
fueling infrastructure and suggest strategies for overcoming these barriers.

ENERGY-EFFICIENT FREIGHT TRANSPORTATION
Many businesses in the APEC-region are reducing their energy costs and
carbon footprints through systematic efforts to improve their freight logistics
and shift from transport by trucks to less energy-intensive transport modes like
ship, barge and rail. There has also been a move toward increased use of clean,
efficient hybrid-electric trucks. This session will explore recent initiatives and
best practices for innovative energy efficient freight transport.
