Why do we display?
“We show in order to sell. Display or
visual merchandising is ‘showing’
products and concepts at their very
best, with the end purpose of making
a sale…we do attempt to convince
the viewer of the value of the object,
the store promoting the object, or the
organization behind the concept.”
Martin M. Pegler has been a professor for thirty years at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York in the
Display & Exhibit Design Department. A leading expert in his field for over 60 years, Martin hosts seminars in the
United States as well as in Latin America, Europe and the Pacific Rim. He has authored 83 books and his textbook,
Visual Merchandising and Display, is used in universities around the world. Martin has been presented with lifetime
achievement awards by the Professionals for the Advancement of Visual Education as well as by PAVE, Planning &
Visual Education Partnership.
He has also been inducted into the Visual Merchandising and Display Industries' Hall of Fame and is an elected
member of the Society of Visual Merchandisers.

Use
Of:
Theme & Color
Color promotes interest and highlights products. If this presentation
were all in white chances are it wouldn’t attract your attention!
Use
Of:
Theme & Color
Note the white carpet and the orange walls. The white sets off the
orange and the orange highlights the products. Notice the set up of
this booth. The front is open and inviting and allows buyers to “come
in.” There is a nice amount of product represented without over
crowding with too much product in the display.
Use
Of:
Theme & Color
Here is an example of merchandising
colorful product on a clean
background. This is also a good
example of how to display many
objects without overcrowding.
Use
Of:

This booth shows use of a
monochromatic color way to set off
the product.

Promote your
brand and
image through
graphics. Notice
how one graphic
showcases the
name and logo
of the company
and the other
graphic
immediately tells
you what kind of
products to
expect. Using
curtains or fabric
as a backdrop
creates interest.
**Note that most trade show halls require fabrics to be flame retardant. Check
rules and regulations before making any fabric plans. **
