Approaches
A Settings Approach
The three key settings for
physical activity behaviour
change include:
• Schools
• Workplaces
• Community
There are multiple types/levels
of influence on PA
behaviours:
 Intrapersonal factors
 Social/cultural factors
 Physical environments
 Policies are usually needed to
change physical
environments

corporate teams for events such as
Corporate Cup, the be active tour and
the Masters Games.

Policy
School
 Mandated minimum time allocation for PE
& sport in Government schools
 Allocated play spaces for various year
levels within the school ground
 Ensure there is activity equipment
monitors allocated during breaks
Community
 Consider the provision of active transport
routes and access to green space in urban
planning of new developments

School Setting-based

Promoting Physical Activity: Settings Based
Approaches
School Settings
Schools play a major role in
shaping children’s attitudes
towards PA and living an
active lifestyle. Schools
encourage lifelong patterns
of PA.
School based programs are;
 Moderately effective
 People who participated in
these programs are more
likely to be active for life.
 Print material and school
curriculum appears to be
the most effective methods.
Active after schools program

sp
However PA decreases as students
during the secondary years due to a
crowded curriculum and student
subject choices.
Schools can increase PA by;
 Following government
recommendations for time allocated
to PE.
 Providing sufficient sports equipment
and facilities / public use.
 Promoting school sporting events

Walking School Bus


The Walking School Bus Program is
a VicHealth initiative that’s giving
communities an effective and easy
way to get children walking to school
again.
Today in Victoria nearly one-third of
all children spend less than 5
minutes walking per day. Inactive
children are more likely to be
overweight – with the proportion of
Australian children who are in this
category now reaching 25%.
Walking to and from school gives
children the opportunity to engage in
regular physical activity.




More than 58 Victorian councils
have implemented Walking School
Bus programs.
At least 3200 primary school
students from more than 200
primary schools use the Walking
School Bus to get to school, with the
help of 800 volunteers.
The ‘buses’ have become a very
positive part of school and
community life and offer many
health, environmental and safety
benefits.
Walking School Bus programs can
be implemented by schools with the
help of your local council.

 Get off the bus, train or tram
one stop early and walk the
rest of the way
 Park the car 15 minutes away
and walk the rest of the way
 Get together with some
workmates and form a sports
team

A ‘community’ refers to local groups
of people, whole cities or whole

Strengthening the communities
knowledge and interest in the
benefits of physical activity is
therefore vital.
Community strategies include;



Developing local facilities
Use of community venues that
encourage physical activity

members on health issues.
Review of council policies
