Course Description:
Introduction of principles, methods, and techniques for communicating with Deaf
people who sign. In addition, development of expressive and receptive sign
skills, manual alphabet, numbers, and sign vocabulary will be a focus. Also, an
overview of syntax, grammar, and culture related to American Sign Language
(ASL) Prerequisites: None. SLG 103 suggested as a co-requisite, but not
required.
Course Objectives:
1. Recognize the parameters of a sign—handshape, location, movement, and palm orientation.
2. Recognize non-verbal communication as it relates to ASL.
3. Apply receptive and expressive mastery of grammatical features of ASL—pronouns, verbs, tense
indicators, negatives, adjectives, adverbs, classifiers, and specific commands, questions, and
statements.
4. Apply receptive and expressive mastery of targeted numbers combined with age, time, money,
and plurals.
5. Recognize and form the manual alphabet.
6. Apply the ability to initiate, conduct and terminate a short specific conversation in ASL.
Grading:
Assignments are given a point value then put in a weighted category as follows:
Expressive assignments:
40%
Receptive assignments:
50%
Daily class work:
10%
The final exam is worth 20% of the semester grade. World Language Department uses 40/40/20 when
calculating the semester grade.
Below is the grade scale:
A 90% - 100%
B 80% - 89%
C 70% - 70%
D 60% - 69%
F 59% and below
Attendance Requirements: Regular attendance and classroom participation are needed for successful
completion of this course. Any student who accumulates three unofficial absences may be dropped from
DUAL STATUS, not the class. Use of a “W” or “Y” as a withdrawal grade will be at my discretion. See
the student calendar page if you will not be attending class. You are responsible for the material
presented when you are not in class. Contact classmates to ensure you are prepared for the next class or
come in for tutoring after school.
STATEMENT REGARDING STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES
Students with disabilities are required to register for services in the Disability Resources and Services
(DRS) office in the Student Center at the beginning of the semester. Do not wait to visit the DRS office if
you want support with any CGCC classes. The DRS office will meet with you to determine
accommodations based on appropriate documentation. Therefore, faculty members are not authorized to
provide or approve any accommodations for students in this class without written instructions from the
DRS office. This must be on file before any accommodation will be provided. You can contact the DRS
office at (480) 857-5188.
Student Handbook: Students are expected to adhere to all guidelines set forth in the Perry student
handbook and are responsible for knowing and following all college policies as outlined in the
CGCC catalog and student handbook.
Extra Credit: No extra credit is available for this class. This is a dual credit class and it is the belief of
Chandler Gilbert Community College and PHS that all work done for a class should receive regular credit
and is more than sufficient to assess the understanding of material presented in the course.
Late work: Late work is not accepted if the student was in class on the day it was assigned and is in
class on the due date. If a student is absent late work is accepted within one week of the original due date.
No credit will be awarded after one week.
