Research Activities:
A mixed research design was adopted in this study. First, qualitative data collection was
conducted by extracting the entries from the online blogging system and Facebook at the end
of the students’ internship period. The username, data and uploading time were recorded for
each blog and Facebook entry.
In addition, quantitative data was collected through structured telephone interviews. The
participants shared their views on their perceptions of the effectiveness of blogs/Facebook for
enhancing their learning experience during summer internship.
Data Analysis:
The content of the students’ blogs and Facebook was analyzed qualitatively using NVivo 8.0
software. Each blog entry, Facebook post or comment was considered as a unit of analysis.
They were coded according to their knowledge management processes and socio-emotional
expressions.
The quantitative data was analyzed using SPSS version 19.0. Responses on the Likert-type
scales were summarized and analyzed using descriptive statistics. Mann–Whitney tests were
conducted to compare the behavioral and perceptual differences between blog and Facebook
users. Statistical significance level was set at p < 0.05.
