Term One report cards will be sent home on February 5, 2014. By this point in the school year, we
have found that most parents are well aware of their child's progress based on the ongoing
communication from the school. Families will receive a letter indicating if their child is meeting
expectations. Should your child’s progress be of concern, the teacher will contact you to discuss ways
to work together to further support his/her learning needs by February 27, 2015. Please also feel free
to contact your child’s teacher if you have any concerns or questions about your child’s progress.
The best way to see how your child is progressing in school is through the ongoing communication
you receive. Some of the ways you may keep up-to-date about your child's progress include the
following:
¨ talk to your child about school
¨ review your child's homework and agenda
¨ receive copies of marks your child has received on assignments and tests
¨ ongoing communication with your child's teacher.
ALL DRIVERS: Help Keep Our Students SAFE!
To all parents, guardians, and community helpers, please ensure that you follow the traffic signs
posted on the street by the City of Brampton for No Stopping or Parking on Dorset Drive within
the bus loading areas. With the extreme weather that we have had in January, it is
understandable that family members who normally walk, may choose to drop off /pick up
students by car. However, we ask that you please consider parking on the side streets
surrounding the school to ease the traffic overload. The extra traffic on Dorset Drive has caused
congestion, especially afterschool, and our buses are being delayed in their departure. We
greatly appreciate your understanding and cooperation in keeping our students safe at all times.
In the Kiss ‘n Ride zone, have your child exit through the passenger door independently.
Allowing students to exit the car on the driver's side creates an unsafe situation. Also, please do
not pass a car on the left side. We want to ensure that every child is safe.
Safe Arrival
We have many students who take the bus to school. To support them as they walk into the
school or school yard, please avoid entering the parking lot between the hours of 9:00 - 9:20 and
3:30 - 4:00. Thank you Dorset Families for your understanding and support of our students’
safety.
If your child is
going to be absent
or late please call
905-793-5211
Thank you Dorset Community for your support with the Regal Fundraiser, $99.48 raised.
Dorset Walks in Winter!
On February 4th at 12:00, Grades K-5 will be going for a 15 minute walk in the community.
Students will be accompanied by their classroom teacher. The Dorset Action Team comprised of
grade 4 and 5 students have promoted and organized this event in partnership with our Peel
Public Health Nurse. Their goal is to encourage the school community to be environmental,
active and healthy! Students from over 30 other countries around the world will also be
participating in a walk on the same day. In the Spring, the Dorset Action Team will also be
organizing a Bike and Bright Day – stay tuned for more details!
Offence Declaration Required For Returning Volunteers
Parents play an important role in the development and education of their children and in the success of
the school community. At Dorset Drive, we welcome and encourage the participation of parents and
community members, and are grateful for the countless hours our volunteers contribute throughout the
school year.
To volunteer at our school, you must complete a short interview and a criminal record check. A
criminal record check is required for all school volunteers in Ontario. Even if you want to accompany
your child on a field trip, you need this record check.
Once you have completed the process, you are on file with the Peel District School Board as being a
school volunteer. All returning volunteers will be mailed an Offence Declaration Form that must be
filled out and returned to the board office each year. You will not be able to volunteer with the Peel
Board if you do not return this form. Forms will be mailed home in February.
FEBRUARY CELEBRATIONS AT
DORSET
African Heritage Month/Black History Month is a
national celebration in North America. It focuses on
the achievements of African Americans and Canadians
who have distinguished themselves. During our
February Character Education assembly, the
contributions, history and culture of individuals of
African descent will be highlighted.
Other celebrations this month include: Flag Day,
Chinese New Year/Lantern Festival, Ground Hog Day,
Valentine’s Day and 100 Days of School. During our
February Character Education Assembly, we will be
hosting an inclusive celebration of these days
Bus Safety Review
 Allow extra time to get to the bus stop. Wear bright
clothing so the bus can see you in the early morning
and late afternoon.
 Stand back from where the bus stops. Buses need extra
room to stop when there is snow and ice on the road.
 Use the handrail when boarding or exiting the bus to
prevent slipping on wet or icy steps or road surfaces.
 Dress for the weather to ensure you stay warm.
 Don't throw snowballs at the bus or other children
waiting for the bus.
 Don't slide on the snow or ice patches in driveways or on
the street.
 Don't push or shove around the bus. Someone could fall
and get hurt.

the Ministry of Education to complement the kindergarten program. These programs are run by

Everyone is a math teacher, parents included
Parents and other adults in our students' lives are important partners in children's mathematics education. By
engaging your children in thinking and talking about mathematics, you help support their numeracy success.
To help you with this, one great resource is the Ministry of Education's Doing Mathemathics With Your Child.
You can find this guide for parents of children in kindergarten to grade online at
