Statistics Introduction
Welcome to the world of Statistics!
What is it all about?
Why do we collect data?



one of the ways we learn is to observe
however, it may be difficult to make
accurate decisions if we do not observe in
an appropriate fashion
collecting data is a systematic method of
making observations that helps to collect
representative data and provides others
with a way of repeating our observations
Where do you see Statistics?



Pretty much everywhere.
Media, government, corporations,
researchers, schools, companies…
Problems arise when people don’t
understand Statistics
4 out of 5 dentists recommend
Crest


Sounds good!
Is this an accurate statistic?
Misleading Data


P&G sent the Crest product to 344 dentists who were
asked to use the product for one week. The dentists
were paid $75 to participate in a survey. 269 dentists
participated in a phone survey where they were
asked "Based on your experience using this oral
rinse, which of the following statements best
describes your most likely recommendation of this
oral rinse to your patients?"
They arrived at 4 out of 5 by combining results of
recommendation with recommendations if asked by
the client.
Women earn 76% as
much as men!

Could be correct…but is it misleading?
Airline Complaints
Owning a Gun

Researchers found that gun owners are 2.7
times more likely to be murdered than nonowners. Does this mean it's safer to not
have guns in the house?
Your first task…



You need to find a current statistic
Bring it to class tomorrow to present to
the class
We’ll have a discussion about whether
or not it’s a valid statistic
Purpose of Statistics


Objective statistical information is vital
to an open and democratic society.
It provides a solid foundation for
informed decisions by elected
representatives, businesses, unions and
non-profit organizations, as well as
individual citizens.
What is data?



Facts or figures from which conclusions
can be drawn
Can take many forms but is often
numerical
Stats Canada collects data everyday to
provide information
What is Statistics?


A common method of presenting
information
Aim is to provide useful information by
means of numbers
