Kealy Barrow
Time/Lesson Duration: 25 minutes
Date:
12-2-2011
Grade: 3rd
OR Standard(s) Addressed and/or Assessed:
3.3.8 Use attributes and properties of two-dimensional shapes to solve problems including applications involving
parallel and perpendicular lines, congruence, symmetry, and perimeter.
AR.03.CP.01 Use experiences, imagination, essential elements and organizational principles to achieve a desired effect
when creating, presenting and/or performing works of art.
AR.03.AC.01 Recognize essential elements, organizational principles and aesthetic effects in works of art.
Objectives:
Content Objective: The students will identify parallel and perpendicular lines. The students will create a work of
art.
Language Objective:
EL.03.RE.08 Demonstrate listening comprehension of more complex text through discussions.
EL.03.RE.10 Point to or clearly identify specific words or wordings that are causing comprehension difficulties and
use strategies to correct.
EL.03.RE.28 Summarize major points from informational text.
EL.03.WR.22 Capitalize correctly geographical names, holidays, and special events
Lesson Overview: Students will learn about Peit Mondrian and create a piece of art in the same style using parallel and
perpendicular lines.
Key Vocabulary: Perpendicular, Parallel, Horizontal, Vertical,
Cubism (seeing all the sides of an object)
Abstract art (uses color and line to create feelings)
Pointalism (paintings with dots)
Fauvist (vivid colors)
Supplementary Materials: Rulers, highlighters, markers, crayons (or paint if you're feeling extra fun!), worksheets.
LESSON IMPLEMENTATION
Time:
5 min
Opening Experience:
Show the fist slide from the smartboard slideshow of Piet Mondrian. Ask the students to talk about things
they notice. Hopefully, they'll notice lines and color. We'll write down what they see - the primary colors
and lines on the board.
Stated Objectives to Students:
"We will be learning about the art of Dutch artist Piet Mondrian. This modern artist developed an abstract
style which combined squares and rectangles using only primary colors separated by black lines. We are
going to use horizontal, perpendicular, parallel, and vertical lines to create art like him. Pay attention
because you are going to pretend you are the artist and apply for a job, so you'll have to know all about
him.” (SLIDE 1)
Time:
20-25 min
Description of Learning Experience:
•
Talk about horizontal lines using smart board and whiteboard (calling children
up one by one to copy me on the whiteboard – repeat with vertical, parallel, and perpendicular
lines) (SLIDE 2)
•
Hand out the “Meet the Artist” worksheet and information paper. Read the
application outloud, taking turns. Tell the children to try to fill out the sheet as we go, raising a
hand to let us know if they've found something interesting out. (SLIDES 3-10)
•
(SLIDE 11) – Create art – I will tell them to put a perpendicular line, etc on
their papers. When they are finished they'll use primary colors to color in polygons.
Closure:
Let's see if you did a good job pretending to be Piet Mondrian. I'm going to excuse you to break one by one
with an exit question. (show me a perpendicular line ... etc.
Checks for Understanding
Walk around during art lesson to see if they were able to use perpendicular, parallel, etc lines. Later, they
will apply for a job. I will ask them to show me the lines on their paper.
Evidence from Students that Content and Language Objectives were Met:
Asking them upon leaving and walking around the room. We will also do a follow up activity reviewing
this vocabulary while working with polygons.
