SCRIP Program
What is SCRIP?
SCRIP is a term that means “substitute money”. When you purchase SCRIP, you’re purchasing
negotiable gift cards and prepaid cards that are used just like cash. They’re the same gift cards that
you buy at the store. Many popular retailers participate in our SCRIP program including Wal-Mart,
Kohl’s, JcPenney, Dominos, Red Lobster, Marriott hotels, Disney Parks, and many, many others. We
currently have approximately 15 local retailers including Riesbeck’s, Mehlman’s, Bud’s Bloomers,
Newellstown Diner, etc. The SCRIP program is used in many Catholic schools as an excellent way to
raise money for the school and provide tuition assistance to their families.
The beauty of SCRIP is that you put your regular household shopping dollars to work. You earn money
for our school without spending a single additional penny. Just spend your regular shopping dollars
with SCRIP at the stores that participate in the SCRIP program! And SCRIP can be used for just about
any household purchase including food, clothing, entertainment, gasoline and dining out. If you
normally spend $100 on groceries, it will still only cost you
$100 to buy SCRIP gift cards. But by doing so, you have earned
money for the school, as well as tuition credit for your family.
How does it work?
SCRIP participating retailers agree to sell gift cards to our
school at a discount. The Great Lakes Scrip Center acts on
behalf of churches, schools and other non-profit organizations
to purchase large amounts of SCRIP from grocery stores,
department stores, and other retailers. Because the SCRIP is purchased with cash up front, the
participating retailers offer a substantial discount. Our cards are purchased through Great Lakes SCRIP
at a discount, and we re-sell the cards to families for full face value. The cards are redeemed for full
face value, and our school keeps the difference as revenue. This revenue is divided equally between
the school and the family making the purchase as tuition credit.
How do I earn tuition credit?
All students enrolled in St. Mary’s Central School and those who anticipate enrollment in the future
can earn tuition credit. Credit is earned on every purchase that you, or your family and friends
purchase designating your “family” to receive credit (it is “ok” to recruit family, friends and employers
to purchase under your number). The amount of credit earned is 50% of the profit earned from these
purchases. For example, if the Smith family purchases $100 of Riesbeck’s SCRIP at 5% profit, the total
profit earned is $5.00. Of the $5.00 earned, 50% ($2.50) goes to the family’s tuition account and the
other 50% goes directly to the school.
Four times a year (February 1, May 1, August 1, and November 1)
your Tuition Statement will reflect your earned SCRIP credit.
When can I purchase SCRIP?
Using SCRIP does require a little planning. You must purchase your SCRIP before you go shopping.

Orders may be sent in daily with students during the school year. These orders will be filled the same
day and sent home with the youngest in the family (or the student listed on the order form). Special
orders are placed on Mondays and available for pick-up on Wednesdays. Most local retailers can be
picked up the same day as you order. All orders must be paid in full at the time of purchase. Be sure
to check out the Great Lakes website (www.glscrip.com) for a list of hundreds of participating retailers!
We encourage everyone to use the SCRIP program (even grandparents, aunts, uncles, and friends)!
Both the school and our school families benefit from the SCRIP program.
St. Mary’s Central School SCRIP program has consistently been a profitable fundraiser. Last year, July
2009-June 2010, we had $667,000 in sales with a school profit of $17,560, a family profit of $19,531
and a scholarship profit of $2,027. Let's work together to increase our profits for the new school year.
Thank you for your support of SCRIP and of SMC!
