TGJ 4M1 – Sound Editing Terminology Key Terms Activity
Note the following sound editing terms and definitions. Define the key terms that are missing definitions:
1. 24-bit sound - is the current standard for digital audio wherein audio is captured and played back as binary
data in a 24-bit word length.
2. Ambience -
3. Amplitude - the signal's volume or loudness.
4. Audio - is another word for sound.
5. Aux (Auxiliary) -
6. Back up - To make a copy of data and to store the copy on an external medium.

30. Limiter - is a compressor set to a ratio of 10:1 or greater. This has the effect of preventing all but the fastest
signals from exceeding the threshold volume, thus forcing them into the desired level range.

32. Meter - is a gauge or digital read-out that shows the level of a signal. Also syncopation count.

34. Microphone - is a device that converts sound waves into audio signals.
35. Mix (noun) - A signal that contains one or more other signals.

40. Normalize - is the process by which the gain of digital audio is increased to its maximum allowable volume.

42. Panning - The left/right positioning of a signal within a stereo image.
