University of Illinois Extension is the flagship outreach effort of the University of Illinois
at Urbana-Champaign, offering educational programs to residents of all of Illinois’ 102
counties – and far beyond.
Through learning partnerships that put knowledge to work, U of I Extension’s programs
are aimed at making life better, healthier, safer and more profitable for individuals, their
families, communities and businesses.
Extension in Cook County works holistically with and within communities to identify
emerging issues, and provides long-term counsel and support toward positive change.
Extension is committed to inspiring confidence, and preparing people of the county for
the needs of a 21st century economy. Therefore, in order to meet the needs of Cook
County residents our staff provides innovative programs in the following areas:





Civic Engagement and Economic Development
Community Education for Adults and Youth
Science, Technology, Engineering and Math
Urban Community Health
Urban Environment and Natural Resources
Cook County Extension staff reaches more than 500,000 people each year, and is
ideally equipped to offer the people of Cook County what they need to succeed in the
urban metropolitan area as well as the global environment. Extension programs are
supported by federal, state, and county funding.
TITLE: Introduction to My Pyramid

Have you heard the saying “you are what you eat”? It’s true! Let My Pyramid be your
guide to eating right, staying fit and growing up healthy. Want to know the amount of
each food group you need daily? Enter your personal information to find out and
receive a customized Daily Food Plan. Learn more about MyFoodapedia and access
to food information such as food groups, calories & comparisons.
TITLE: My Pyramid Tracker & Build a Personal Profile

My Pyramid Tracker is an online dietary and physical activity assessment tool that
provides information on your diet quality, physical activity status, related nutrition
messages, and links to nutrient and physical activity information. The Food
Calories/Energy Balance feature automatically calculates your energy balance by
subtracting the energy you expend from physical activity from your food
calories/energy intake. Use of this tool helps you better understand your energy
balance status and enhances the link between good nutrition and regular physical
activity.
TITLE: How To Understand & Use Nutrition Food Labels

How do you know if a food item is high or low in sugar? Trans fat? Salt? Through this
tool, you will learn how to read the label to assure that they are selecting healthy foods
which provide a good source of vitamins, and minerals and are low in fat, salt and
sugar. Knowing how to read the label is key to making healthier food choices.
TITLE: Analyze My Plate

Use this tool to examine what you eat. Learn how to create healthy meals and add a
variety of colorful vegetables and fruits. This tool addresses breakfast, lunch and
dinner.
TITLE: Budget Tips
PRESENTER: Sonja Henson, Program Assistant

Learn to calculate an appropriate healthy food budget for your family, based on
USDA’s low- cost food plan. This easy-to-use calculator, offered by Iowa State
University Extension, helps to create a budget for what is a reasonable amount to
spend to feed your family healthy meals.

The Federal Drug Administration (FDA) continues to work on improving the way it
provides and delivers recall information. When there is a food recall, many people will
want more information. Learn how to access this information and subscribe to receive
all the updates on food recalls.
