Emerging Forms of

Tobacco in the U.S.

Alternative Forms of Tobacco aka

Potentially Reduced Exposure

Products (PREPS)

New Tobacco

Products

Once limited to cigarettes, cigars, pipe tobacco and chewing or spit tobacco, tobacco products today come in more flavors, forms, shapes and sizes, and with more unproven health claims, than ever before.

Key trends include:

Introducing flavored products

Creating novel smokeless products

Targeting products and marketing

Sustaining addiction and discouraging quitting

Reduced Exposure vs.

Reduced Risk

Reduced Exposure: The shortened level of secondhand smoke omitted and its inhalation to non-smokers

Reduced Risk: A lower risk of negative health effects associated with the use of the tobacco product

New Advertisement Methods

Manufacturers focus on the habits, desires, and tastes of their intended audience.

“The tobacco pandemic is a communicated disease. It is communicated through advertising, through the example of smokers and through the smoke to which non-smokersespecially children-are exposed.” – Gro Harlem

Brundtland, Director General, World Health

Organization, 1999

All you will taste is the water. For use where smoking is not allowed or for people who want to quit smoking.

“NICLite® contains a purified organic nicotine molecule in a Complex Homeopathic

Formula, which will go into equal suspension in 8 ounces of pharmaceutical grade water.”

Nicogel is a tobacco gel that smokers can substitute for cigarettes. It is to be used when a smoker is in a place where they are not allowed to smoke.

It is not a smoking cessation product. To use Nicogel one must take a single press of gel and rub it into their skin.

Moving from ideas to action

Questions to ask yourself when making an action plan:

Have a goal. How can we write down the goal in simple terms?

How to spread the message —who needs to be educated, how do we get our message out, etc

When to begin and end the work towards this goal. Are these dates realistic in terms of what everyone can do?

Materials are needed—food, pencils and paper, poster board, etc

Make sure that everyone knows what their responsibility will be.

How do we evaluate the successfulness of the action steps? How do we know when we’ve finished the steps?
