Presidents Message
The participants have made their selections, practicing and rehearsing is done, the stage is set, for the annual
Kenora District Festival of the Arts.
We are very fortunate in this community to have a vibrant and diverse Festival.
In a continuing effort to broaden the appeal of the Festival we have added two new classes This year we are proud
to introduce Story Telling, and reintroduce Dance. We feel that the opportunity for Story Telling will give a number of
people of all ages a chance to be involved in the Festival. Dance has been absent for a number of years. As with
many of the disciplines, the dedication of a talented teacher makes a big difference, we are pleased to welcome Erin
McCuaig who is encouraging her students to enter the dance classes. I’m sure that the founding members would be
very pleased to know that the Festival is alive, well and growing. The Festival has played an important part in the
lives of many of the citizens of Kenora. Many of us have been participants in the past, or have had a family member
or a friend involved. I believe that the Festival may be one of the major reasons that we have such a strong and
vibrant arts community in Kenora. It is amazing the number of solo performers and groups that offer their talents in
the community. They can be heard and seen at the Harbour front, at the schools, large and small choral groups,
everything from Bach to the Blues.
The months of preparation by the many dedicated volunteers have once again put all of the pieces in place for the
Festival. The list of talented participants from the city of Kenora, Dryden, Fort Frances and the surrounding area is
very impressive. We should consider ourselves fortunate that we have such a great wealth of people, of all ages,
who are prepared to present their talents for our enjoyment. The benefits of the Festival are numerous. It gives an
opportunity for the artist to showcase their talent before an appreciative audience. This is a very important part of the
learning process. The performers will now have the opportunity to hear other musicians, actors, and see visual
artists, all of whom will receive a written adjudication for their effort. The goal of the Festival is to encourage all of the
participants to do their best, and enjoy the enthusiasm of those around them. It is a known fact that participation in
this type of activity has had very positive effects in the life skills of the individuals.
I feel that it is very important for us as a community to keep this valuable asset alive and well. The arts play a very
important part in the fabric of our community, and deserve the support and encouragement of all of us.
Thank you to all of the many dedicated volunteers who contribute countless hours of work and support to the
Festival. The Festival committee would like to offer special thanks to our loyal financial contributors for their
continued and valued support.
The Hi-Lites Concert this year is Saturday, April 25th at Knox United Church at
7:00 pm.
See you at the Festival,
Len Mark

BAND AND INSTRUMENTAL ADJUDICATOR: Janice Finlay
Biography
Saxophonist Janice Finlay is one of those rare artists who successfully merges outstanding
talent as a performer with remarkable teaching ability. Janice has worked as a festival
adjudicator since the mid-nineties and enjoys traveling throughout Manitoba and northern
Ontario in this role.
An award-winning educator, Janice taught her first saxophone student in 1978 and has maintained
an active and varied teaching practice ever since. She has presented jazz appreciation courses
to the general public, instructed countless private students, worked as a music specialist and
director in middle and senior high schools and as a band director and instructor at postsecondary institutions. In 2012 Janice harnessed her considerable experience as a faculty
member at various summer music camps to launch a successful summer saxophone camp at the
Winnipeg Conservatory of Music. Janice graduated from McGill University’s prestigious jazz
performance program, and is a “triple threat” in the woodwind world, performing
professionally on saxophone, flute and clarinet. Two critically-acclaimed feature albums
showcase her considerable skills as a composer and arranger in addition to her saxophone
artistry. A freelance performer.Janice directs her own jazz and commercial groups, is a longtime member of Winnipeg’s
Ron Paley Big Band, and is a first-call sax player for the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, visiting
touring music acts, musical theatre productions and recording projects.
Please visit www.classactmusic.com for more information about Janice’s upcoming appearances
and projects.

STORYTELLING ADJUDICATOR: Mary Chown
Biography
Mary Louise has taken storytelling in many innovative directions from her base in the Manitoba
storytelling community. She co -founded the Manitoba Storytelling Guild, was artistic director
of the Magic of One Concert series, and served as the first Storyteller-in-Residence at the
Winnipeg Public Library. As a performer, with drum, hammered dulcimer, and a close attention to
the music of language, she demonstrates a creative approach to storytelling as a performing
art, often collaborating with Canadian and International musicians. Once a little prairie
chicken, but now a full fledged Crone, she tells tales that connect the worlds of ordinary and
extra-ordinary experience. Over the years, she has been a teacher, hospice storyteller, and
visual artist. She has performed at storytelling festivals across Canada and in Australia and
Great Britain. You may have already heard her on CBC radio, or at the Winnipeg Folk Festival,
or read her new book, NOW I KNOW THE WORLD IS ROUND:Stories at the End of Life.
She continues to tell stories from her farm near the picturesque hamlet of RIVER HILLS,
MB….where she has become known as the River Hills Raconteur.
