The march to the sea began on November 15, 1864.
It started in Atlanta, Georgia.
We captured it on September 2, 1864.
We had to abandon our supplies and march.
All the way to the Atlantic Ocean.
I wanted to prove something to the Confederate government.
They couldn’t protect their people from invaders.
I wanted to prove that the Union has a lot of power.
So much that the Confederacy couldn’t resist.
I spent several weeks preparing.
We were about to change our bases from one coast to another.
I decided not to move through Alabama to Mobile.
It no longer held any military significance.

I had around 62,000 troops marching through Georgia.
Abolishing everything in my path, I went to Savannah.
I felt like the Confederates got their strength from a few things.
Factories, farms, and railroads.
If I could destroy those, the Confederacy would collapse.
Thus, I was determined to finish their own supplies.
We raided farms and plantations.
I stole and slaughtered many animals.
I also took as much food as possible since we abandoned our own.
We arrived in Savannah on December the 21st.
The city was not defended at all.
All of the troops had already fled, making my job much easier.
We gave 25,000 bales of cotton and the city to Mr. Lincoln as a Christmas gift.
In 1865, we left and burned everything on our way to Charleston.
I saw many people screaming, trying to save themselves and their families.
I ignored it and kept moving forward with my duties.
I had to help my Union win this brutal war against slavery.

In April, they surrendered and the Civil War was finally over.
I had succeeded in destroying their confidence.
I was the one who had made it impossible for them to win.
My duties here were done.
