ABE/CE 455/555 (3) I Introduction to soil and water relationships, irrigation systems, irrigation
water supply, and irrigation management, basic designs. 1ED, 2ES.
Goal
This course is designed to give upper division students in CE and ABE an understanding of water
flow processes in soils, plant water and salinity stress, evapotranspiration processes, irrigation
economics, spatial variability in fields, pumps, pipes, groundwater, and channels.

Course notes available on D2L. Copyrighted but free to registered students. If friends or
colleagues would like electronic or paper copies of the notes, please direct them to the College of

Exams will be open notes and computers. We will take the exams in Shantz 338 so that those
without computers can access the internet and programs. If everyone has a laptop, then exams
will be in Shantz 440. The exams will emphasize knowledge and thinking rather than computer
skills. Exams will be handwritten.
Project
Groups of students will either write an Excel/VBA computer program, Matlab program, Arc-Info
program, or other program, for some aspect of soil and water resources management.
Student groups will make a presentation on December 7-9.
Graduate student projects will include literature review and will take a more in-depth approach.
