The Harlem Renaissance
A cultural movement that spanned the 1920s and 1930s
centered in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City
where African Americans expressed themselves through
the arts, literature and music.
It brought unprecedented creative activity in writing,
art, and music and redefined expressions of AfricanAmericans and their heritage
The Great Migration – hundreds of African Americans
moved from South to North to the big cities in search
of jobs.
A major factor leading to the rise of the Harlem
Renaissance was the migration of African-Americans
to the northern cities

