I happened into emigrants from this German village while searching for the origin of Bernhard Franck &
his wife Maria Lutz, who had a child baptized in the New Holland Lutheran records of Lancaster County,
Pennsylvania, in 1752.
Several researchers—W. Cary Anderson and Suzy Bettac—have previously examined the original church
books. Both made some of their findings available online, which I used as a guide post to compile some
of the information below. Dr. Anderson was working on a manuscript (per 2001-2002 message board
postings); however, I find no evidence that he finalized or published his work. If it exists, far more
information—and more emigrants—is available.
Dr. Anderson and Ms. Bettac indicated that the village minister indicated migration next to baptisms in
the church book. I have not viewed the original book. I strongly recommend descendants order the
microfilm of the original records to verify all information below—and to learn much more.
Please consider my work as a guideline for further research and verification—not as a professional
publication.
ADVISEMENT: This file—as of March 2014—is not finished. Most of the Hochdorf emigrants settled in
the vicinity of Philadelphia—an area outside of my research expertise.

Emigrants not currently compiled:
Dr. Anderson made several posts to genealogical boards in 2001 seeking evidence in the Colonies of
emigrants from Hochdorf. It appears that—upon viewing the original Hochdorf records—he identified
other emigrants from the pastor’s notations. I have not yet pursued the following leads suggested by Dr.
Anderson:
From 2001 to 2002, I find online evidence that Dr. W. Cary Anderson of Decatur, Arkansas, was working
on a manuscript of American immigrants from Hochdorf. I find no evidence that his work was ever
published—though he may have deposited copies at unknown locations. Dr. Anderson’s interest in the
village was based on his belief that his ancestor had left Hochdorf for America; however, after later
research cast doubt on this theory, Dr. Anderson appears to have stopped his research (see posting below).

My how stories get around. I did not know that my book THE CATT FAMILY IN AMERICA was no
longer available; nor did I know that it was being revised. This is not said to offend anyone. It is just to
show how we all get things wrong. The book is still in print. I do live at the address that someone recently
posted.
I had prepared a 200 page mss on 1738-1800 American Immigrants from Hochdorf, the village of what I
thought were our Katz. Most people in that village are Katz or are related to Katz. It is indexed, but I've
never typed the index. I also was preparing a mss on 1801-1900 American Immigrants from Hochdorf.
There were about 80 in the 1700s and over 200 in the 1800s.
Just as I was getting to the last name in the 1800 work--Walz--I decided it was important to check on the
name I was working on. To find more I went to the 1700s Communion Lists. I started again with 1738
and worked forward. In the 1740 I was startled to see taht the last name on the early Dec. 1740
Communion list was Michael Röhm, single weaver.
There was only one Michael Röhm of Hochdorf that could be this Michael. That would be the one that
was born in 1721, illegitmate son of Anna Maria Katz and Michael Röhm.
That stopped my research and compiling of the mss. "What was Michael Röhm doing in Hochdorf? He
was supposed to be the Michael Katz that was 17 in 1738 and arrived on the Snow Fox with his Uncle
Michael Katz, b 1689 in Hochdorf."
I can no longer support what I have stated since the early 1990s and wrote in the Catt book when one was
ordered. I corrected "father and son" and made it "uncle and nephew".
At this time, I am not up to searching surrounding villages in the depth it would take to try to find the
answers. I do believe that our Michael Katz came from that area. Hochdorf a. Horb, Wuerttemberg (now
Hochdorf-Nagold, Baden-Wuerttember) is know as the Katz village. When I ordered the Ortsippenbuch
[a total village genealogy] I wasn't clear which one I wanted as six villages are now connected to Nagold.
Since I mentioned Katz, the author knew it was Hochdorf I wanted.
However, as there is new data that conflicts with my previous conclusion, I have to say for the present:
"Do NOT continue using my statement as to the ancestry of our Michael Katz, 17, who arrived in 1738 on
the SNOW FOX."
I've posted similar data on Genelogy.com. I hope all you cousins will help get this work to anyone you
know that has knowledge of my work on Hochdorf, Wuerttemberg. Thousands of hours and thousands of
dollars were spent on this research. It was fun, exciting, and rewarding as well as frustrating. But until this
last hitch, I was always able to overcome all the problems with the research.
I did exchange with lots of descendants of other immigrants from Hochdorf. I was planning a trip there
and still want to go some day. It looks like a beautiful area and lots to see and do on day trips out from the
area.

On the 1749 Ranier, which arrived in Philadelphia on 26 Sep 1749, I find Hans Conrad Lutz, Martin Lutz,
and Hans Jacob Lutz—all signing their names in close proximity to each other. As this ship has several
Katz emigrants from Hochdorf, I presume that this is the same Conrad Lutz who left Hochdorf in 1749. I
can identify his settlement in Earl Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
Based on the notes of researcher Suzy Bettac (see below), the Martin Lutz and Hans Jacob Lutz on the
same ship were father and son from Hochdorf. I have not yet located where they settled in the Colonies.

In the research indicated by Dr. W. Cary Anderson posted below, he identifies Jacob Esch and his sister
Catharina Esch as 1751 emigrants from Hochdorf. He notes that Catharina left with her illegitimate child
Johann Jacob, who was born in 1745. I find this child in online abstracts, but it is unclear to me whether
the mother married the father some years later prior to emigration.
Also, I noted a Michael Esch on the 1751 Duke of Wirtemberg who—logically—is Jacob’s brother;
however, Dr. Anderson makes no mention of this man.

PENNSYLVANIA RECORDS:
I do not have access to all records pertaining to the Philadelphia Moravian congregation; however, Egle’s
Notes & Queries (see below) published a membership roster dated 1766 that includes Martin Katz & his
wife Maria Vogt (the 1749 emigrants) and the Jacob Katz & his wife Barbara Werner. The Jacob Katz’s
date of birth is given as 25 July 1711. I do not find a Jacob Katz with a similar date of birth in the online
Hochdorf abstracts. (There may have been other Katz families in nearby villages.)

Note the Martin Katz and Jacob Katz on preceding pages who both arrived in 1749. Also note the Katz
girls born at Penn’s Neck, New Jersey, listed in the second column of the second page copied above.
