Newspeak

The continually developing (and simplifying) language of Oceania

Makes thoughtcrime impossible by narrowing the range of possible expression

Euphemism

A pleasant way of saying something unpleasant

“Quaker” responses to the following slides

“Passed Away”

“Previously Owned”

“Downsizing”

“Energy Exploration”

“Collateral Damage”

Reflect

Why would BB and Minitrue want to use

Euphemisms?

Weasel Words

Phrases that deliberately misrepresent, or that in fact mean the very opposite of what they suggest. Weasel words are intentionally sneaky.

These phrases misrepresent the truth, although they are not necessarily untrue.

Quaker Responses to the following slides

“Universal Voluntary

Military Training”

“Part of a Nutritious

Breakfast”

“Up to 50% off all products!”

Reflect

Why would BB & Minitrue use Weasel Words?

Doublespeak

Language constructed to disguise or distort its own actual meaning

A contradiction between the word and its meaning

Quaker Responses

“Pacification”

“Reducing Costs”

“Pre-emptive Strike”

“Capital Punishment”

Reflect

Why would BB & Minitrue want to use

Doublespeak?

Obfuscation

Deliberate use of language to confuse an issue

This is not lying, but it is often untruthful— confuse your listeners to manipulate their conclusions

Quaker Responses

“It’s a success that hasn’t occurred yet. And I don’t know that I see that as a failure…”

"I reminded [the soldiers] and their families that the war in Iraq is really about peace."

"The company has encountered a public regulatory action in the last 12 months.”

Reflect

Why would BB and Minitrue want to use

Obfuscation?

Catchwords

Could also be referred to as “careful naming”

Names that immediately create an intended reaction in audiences

Often a catchy name can obscure the issue itself

Quaker Responses

“Pro-Life”

“Pro-Choice”

“Operation Iraqi Freedom”

“The Patriot Act”

Reflect

Why would BB & Minitrue want to use

Catchwords?

Implied Bias

Use of words that contains possible unspoken judgments about the subject

“Illegal” vs

“Undocumented”

“Social Security Reform”

“Islamic Community”

“Disabled”

Reflect

Why would BB & Minitrue want to use “implied bias”?

Group Task

Find one example each of kind of Language

Manipulation in the media. Create a short Google Slides presentation or Prezi in which you display the image or video and discuss the following: the context of the word or message what its purpose appears to be who is selling it how the language is being manipulated (discuss also which form(s) of language manipulation is(are) being used

Finally, answer how this might be related to what we know about Oceania at this point
