National Clinical Programme for Anaesthesia
Dr. Bairbre Golden completed her three year term as NCPA Director in March 2015 and before doing so oversaw the completion and
publication of two important NCPA Work Stream projects, namely the Model of Care for the Pre Assessment Unit and the Model of Care for
Paediatric Anaesthesia. These publications represent almost two years of work involving the specialty of Anaesthesia, the Nursing Profession,
Patient’s representatives and the HSE and was lead and coordinated by Dr. Golden.
Dr. Jeremy Smith has taken over from Dr. Golden as NCPA National Clinical Lead and one of his first tasks is to address the problem of
inadequate anaesthesia staffing in maternity units around the Country. Discussions involving the National Clinical Programme for Obstetrics
& Gynaecology the Irish Standing Committee AAGB&I, and the HSE have already begun.
In May 2015 the first part of the Audit Work Stream project which examined the feasibility of using HIPE as an audit tool for anaesthesia,
was published. The second part of this project which presents data on certain aspects of anaesthesia activity for the year 2013, will published
later this year.
