• 1. Crosshatching/shading-Two methods of showing various features
on a map. Crosshatching consists of two sets of lines crossing each
other. Shading is an area of gray, black or color
• 2. Historical Map- A map that shows features as they were at a
certain time in the past. Ex. 13 colonies
• 3. Key/Legend- shows the meaning of any special symbols, such as a
dot ot represent a city or green coloring to show low lying land
• 4 Physical Map- that shows natural features such as land and its
different elevations and bodies of water
• 5. Political Map tjhat shows human-made features such as national
borders, cities and roads
• 6. Pre history- the period of human existance before there were
written records
• 7. Primary Source- Historical records such as documents and
artifacts that date from and belong to the time being studied
• 8. Secondary Source- Historical writings dating from a time later
than the one being studied
• 9 Projection- In map making a means of recording the curved
surface of the earth on a flat piece of paper
• 10 Compass Rose-is a figure on a compass map, natuical chart or
monument used to display the orientation of the cardinal directions
• 11. Latitude-the angular distance north or south of the earth’s
equator
• 12 Longitude Angular distance of the earth surface measured east
or west of the prime meridian
• 13. Identifying- To establish an identification with another or others
• 14 Analyzing- To separate into parts or basic priniciples so as to
determine the nature of the whole
• 15 Interpreting- to explain the meaning of
• 16 Compare-To examine in order to note the
similarites or differences of
• 17. Economic- of relating to the practical
necessities of life material
