Less than a millimeter thick
Has a waterproof substance that keeps water from soaking
in
Keeps water from evaporating out
Water proof substance acts as a guard to keep dirt, germs,
and chemicals out
Cells at bottom are alive---top cells are dead
Body cells and tissue are made of mostly water
Cells at the top are dead—they rub off new cells replace
old. Dead skin cells make dust you see in your house. Yes
your ‘boogers’ are dead skin cells getting caught in your
nose hairs when you breathe—GROSS!!! But that’s life!
DERMIS
 Much
thicker than the epidermis
 3 millimeters thick
 Made of all living cells
 Nerves & blood vessels are located in the
dermis
 Hair roots & some glands are in the dermis
Glands & Pores

Glands- Special groups of cells which
produce & store substances
Example-oil gland-release oily liquid which keeps the
skin soft and smooth

Pores small openings in the skin that release
sweat & oil

How the Skin Helps keep the body
cool
 Sweat
is one way the body cools itself
 The other way is when the body becomes
too warm, the blood vessels in the dermis
expand or get larger. More blood flows to
the skin. The red is caused by expanded
blood vessels and this increases blood flow.
As blood flows to the skin, body heat in the
blood leaves through the skin.
Pigment
 Pigment-
the substance in the dermis that
gives the skin color
How does pigment protect the skin? It keeps
the sun rays from damaging the body
tissues
An animal with little or no pigment……
