Student Learning Outcomes Training and Resource Sheet
January 2016
The Division of Student Affairs has adopted “communication” as the topic for a Division-wide student learning outcome
for student employees. Each department may develop their own specific outcome and craft appropriate language to fit
their needs.
ABCD’s of Writing Learning Outcomes
Audience/Who: Who is expected to benefit from the learning outcome. Be as specific as possible.
Behavior/What: The skill/knowledge/ability that the audience is expected to learn.
Condition/How: The program, service, and/or intervention that was intended to impart this knowledge.
Degree/How Much: How much will be accomplished, how well the behavior needs to be performed, and to what level?
Example:
Students employed in the Wellness Center will demonstrate written and verbal communication skills to effectively
communicate with colleagues, supervisors, and members at an advanced level.
