The Tragedy of Julius Caesar Unit
February 24th - April 28th, 2014
The William Shakespeare/The Tragedy of Julius Caesar unit will consist of a number of
activities. We will be researching the lives of Julius Caesar and William Shakespeare, honing our
research and citation skills. We will be reading the play both as a class and individually, focusing
specifically on Shakespeare’s use of figurative language. The play also presents a rich source to
examine the art of rhetoric, and Shakespeare’s impressive vocabulary presents innumerable
opportunities to further understand the English language and its evolution. Students will be
answering questions, both verbally and in writing, in which they demonstrate their
comprehension of these topics and the play itself. The unit allows for a closer examination of the
politics, culture and customs of the Roman Empire at its greatest physical expanse; of the life of
William Shakespeare; and of England in the late 1500s and early 1600s.
We will spend some time in the first two weeks of the unit familiarizing ourselves with
the Ohio Graduation Test the students will take from March 10th through the 14th. We will look
at how questions are constructed and scored, and practice some OGT-style sample questions. I
hope to alleviate any anxiety students have, and continue to prepare them to be successful on
this, and all other, important assessments.
Listed below are important dates and information. Due to life’s funny little quirks, dates
are subject to change.
