Foreshadowing: Chapters 1-6:
Foreshadowing is a regular feature there no surprises in this novel!
Chapter 1:
 Hints in the first chapter foreshadow the pattern of the novel: the transience
of comradeship, the glamour of the island is a temporary garment, the conch
is a “toy”, the mock hunt becomes all too real.
 Indications of darkness to come in the beast images
 Jack brings the choir including Simon “fumbling” “the creature”
 Simon faints – breaks away from choir, later won’t join them hunting.
 “When they had fallen apart…” pg 29. Their society does fall apart
later…Chp8 “What makes things fall apart like they do?” (Ralph to Piggy)
 Push rock over the cliff an accident in Coral Island, deliberate here
 Candle buds reaction of Ralph, Simon, Jack – Hack’s destructive tendencies
alluded to p33
 Next time there would be no mercy. P34
Chapter 2: Many devices such as Ralph’s sane, procedural approach vs Jack’s
atavistic (primitive) tendencies p36








“We’ll have rules…and anyone who breaks them…” Jack rule by force and
threats of violence
Choir have discarded their cloaks – casting off vestiges of their civilized
upbringing
Boy with birth mark afraid of beastie, Ralph says no such thing uses reason.
Beast is a snake like thing. Pg 39
All rush off to light signal fire, disorganized led by Jack. “The conch forgotten”

Piggy has a “martyred expression” pg 42
“The conch doesn’t count on top of the mountain”
Jack snatches glasses by force, Piggy screams in terror pg 44 “I can hardly
see. You’ll break the conch!”
The results of their ignorance and irresponsibility are fatal – both with the
birthmark gone. Pg 51
Chapter 3 “…as if it wasn’t a good island”
 Little ‘uns talk and scream; shelter falling down so is their civilization and their
friendship
 Jack wearing tattered shorts, eyes “nearly mad” pg52
 Huts are shaky pg 54 so is their “society”
 The antagonism between Jack and Ralph is now “audible” pg 56
 “People don’t help much” pg 59 Most of the boys are not helping Ralph –
foreshadows end when they all turn on him and hunt him
 “He’s queer” Ralph about Simon – difference is becoming more pointed pg

Chapter 4 – events of this chapter foreshadow others to come e.g. Roger stone
throwing, Piggy’s lens smashed, fire out and pig killed – killing more important than
rescue,





Page 63-64 descriptions of island less rosy, glamorous now, More threatening
“Strange things happen” mysteries, illusions, menace.
Page 68 Roger “a darker swarthiness crept beneath the shadow of his skin”
Page 69 Jack’s mask, savagery on the ascent

Page 77 Jack punches Piggy in the stomach – angry at Ralph
Chapter 5 – Jack’s “bollocks to the rules”






Pg 88 “too many things” assembly is growing tired of Ralph losing his grip on
leadership
Page 90 Jack says the little uns are useless, keeps fear of beast alive
Page 100 “favour Piggy as you always do” Jack increasingly hard towards
Piggy, questioning Ralph mercilessly at assembly.
“If you give up what would happen to me?” Piggy realizes level of Jack’s
hatred towards him “He hates you too Ralph.” Pg 102
P103 – irony in comments about adults, they will be rescued but are adults
really any better than the boys?
“If only they could get a message to us” Ralph – then parachutist lands on
island.
Chapter 6 – Piggy’s death is foreshadowed in rock smashing









Pg 101 “The bright morning was full of threats”.
“Frightened?” Jack to Ralph
“Sucks to the little’ uns” Jack
“Someone’s got to look after them” Ralph “Nobody has so far’ Jack
Pg 133 “However Simon thought about the beast there rose before his inward
sight the picture of a human at once heroic and sick”.
Pg 115 Ralph’s comments to Simon about the beast – realizes Simon is
different, doesn’t have same level of insight as Simon.
Pg 155 – Ralph’s description of the sea – ominous, sucking, heaving. Barrier to
rescue
Pg 156 – Ralph and Jack’s different takes on a castle rock – foreshadow the
end it IS “a rotten place”.
Pg 119 “Are you all off your rockers?” Ralph – descent into madness,
depravity
