What is Interprofessional Education (IPE)?
• An educational approach in which two or more disciplines
collaborate in the teaching-learning process with the goal of
fostering interdisciplinary/interprofessional interactions that
enhance the practice of each discipline
• Institute of Medicine and other reports have concluded that
interdisciplinary approach is required to provide optimal
patient-centered care, and healthcare education must be
redesigned to provide healthcare professionals with the
knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to work in teams
• IOM (1972): “Educating for the Health Team”
• IOM (2001): "Crossing the Quality Chasm: A New Health System
for the 21st Century"
• IOM (2003): "Health Professions Education: A Bridge to Quality"
• IOM (2003): "Academic Health Centers: Leading Change in the
21st Century"

Focus is on working together as a team and
learning from and about one another…
…and effectively communicating with patients

WHAT TODAY IS
NOT ABOUT:
This is not an assessment of your

You will not be performing
a physical exam
Friendly Reminders

before you leave for the day)
Attendance will be reported to individual colleges.

Survey completion counts towards the grade in
the course
Keep an open mind…
There may be things that
your team will need to
learn about this patient
How it Will all Work…
First: go to your assigned team room
(insert pictures of room set up, monitor)
Teams encompass diverse health professional roles and have
3 of 4 students per team
 Teams are assigned a team number that corresponds to your team room
Students will observe each other in the patient’s room via a live video feed
How it Will all Work…

An overhead announcement will indicate when 2 minutes remain
If someone asks a question that you were planning to ask, you may
want to ask it again…you may get a different answer!
Insert picture of team room and exam room?
If you finish early, return back to your “team room ”
Don’t send in the next student until told to do so
How it Will all Work…
Fourth:
 After each person has met with patient, reconvene in
team room. You will have 7 minutes
to formulate a plan
