1. Approval of Minutes
Minutes reviewed. Frank Kingery moved for minutes to stand, seconded by Kimberlie Moock, Approved
by the committee.
2. Wireless update
John Henderson reported that quotes had been received for Coleman, $15,000, and Buzzard, $75,000.
These buildings were chosen for wireless updates because they currently have laptop initiatives. Quotes
will be put before ATAC for approval. Work is expected to be completed this semester.
3. Campuswide Technology Assessment Survey
Henderson stated the committee has decided to postpone this survey for a while due to the NCA survey
going out. It has been about three years since one was done, and they will proceed after the NCA survey
is complete.
4. VDI update
Brian Murphy reported to committee members this is the first full semester the College of Education will
be using VDI. ITS staff members currently are working with the School of Technology on a project to
offer CISCO classes online. The VDI upgrade is in progress with deployment at a later date. Plans to
include administrative offices in pilots are under way.
5. IPATHE update
Murphy recently attended an IPATHE meeting at SIU-C. SIU-C has made changes to its IT infrastructure.
It is outsourcing student email to Microsoft Office 365 also. SIU-C currently is offering Mobile Dog and
Dell Latitude tablets to incoming freshmen and transfer students. Committee members questioned how
the purchase of mobile dog and tablets is funded. Students who leave the university before graduating
must turn them in but those who graduate are allowed to keep them. Details are available at the SIU-C
website. The Mobile Dog app provides much the same information we already cover.
A spin-off sub group of IPATHE also is working on a partnership to co-locate for disaster recovery. It is
working on an outline of the process. SIU-C has a disk array at ISU – mirror of critical data. ISU will colocate at Northern. We have the technology but not the equipment. Another sub group is working on
procurement.
6. IE9 and Java 7
Kingery reported Ellucian is now supporting IE9 and Java 7. Kingery’s team currently is picking key areas
for testing to verify business as usual. After testing they will work with the Help Desk to roll out IE9.
Campus Loan Manager still will not work with IE9 but will work for the majority of users.
7. Other
Jeff Cross introduced visiting professor Dr. José Rosa from the University of Wyoming. Dr. Rosa is a
visiting scholar who will be here for one year.
Kimberlee Moock reported the launch of Prowl mobile app received great feedback. A large number of
photos were uploaded. Branding is possible.
Cross reported a virtual kiosk had been installed at the east entrance of Old Main. This installation was
done in collaboration with University Advancement. The kiosk offers a welcome message, information
about the university, directions and is ADA compliant. More kiosks are scheduled to be installed across
campus.
Cross also reported an updated version of Astra will be put into use in February. One benefit of the new
software is a browser-based interface. At some point it may be able to replace some other scheduling
applications on campus.
Dr. Weber reported the Strategic Plan calls to develop a technology dashboard. The summary on
technical investments should be up and running this semester.
