Reading
• A two part question which will assess the student’s knowledge and
understanding of the novel Of Mice and Men and the writer’s use of
language.
• Spelling, punctuation and grammar are worth a small percentage of the
mark
*skills are transferable to English Literature exam
Writing
• Students complete one of a choice of two non-fiction tasks and are
assessed on their understanding of genre, purpose and audience; use of
language and organisation skills
• Spelling, punctuation and grammar are worth a higher percentage of the
mark

Content – Prose
a) The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde
Students answer one 3 part question on an extract which will
assess their knowledge of character/theme/setting and their
understanding of the writer’s use of language.
A small percentage of overall mark is awarded for spelling,
grammar and punctuation.
b) Of Mice and Men
Students answer one of a choice of two questions exploring
character/theme/setting which will assess their understanding
of the novel in its social, historical and cultural context.
A small percentage of overall mark is awarded for spelling,
grammar and punctuation.
English Literature
Content – Poetry
a) Unseen Poem
Students answer a question based on an unseen poem which
will asses their understanding of the poem and the writer’s
use of organisation and language.
b) Poetry Anthology
Students answer a single question comparing a named poem
with another poem of their choice from the anthology which
will assess their understanding of the poem; the poet’s use of
organisation and language and the their ability to make links
and comparisons

Extras!
• Students will be given past papers and mark
schemes which are being worked on in class, to
complete as part of their revision. They should be
encouraged to adhere to timings when doing these
independently.
• There will be 30 minute exam preparation sessions on
the morning of each exam.
