I Hit the Bottom
I remember regaining consciousness. I looked around and realized that doctors and nurses were moving
around me like mad. I was in some sort of emergency room, but couldn’t understand why. I was told
then by an orthopedic surgeon that I was going to need some operations. The neurosurgeons standing
beside him nodded in agreement. I couldn’t believe what was happening to me. I had never had a
single broken bone in my life; now I had plenty. I had numerous thoracic injuries, badly broken fifth
lumber vertebrae, spinal fluid was leaking along with massive blood loss. I was really a mess. That first
week in the intensive care unit, I remember thinking: “I will get no more chances. This is it.”
I had always believed in a Supreme Being – God, if you will. My rationalization was that if a relatively
simple thing like a bicycle could not be a product of time, chance, and space, then how could an
infinitely more complicated design like a human being be such? Growing up, I wondered, “Where do I fit
in all of this? Why is the world in the shape it’s in?” The thing that puzzled me most was the
inconsistent nature of people. Why did my friends praise me one moment, and then slander me behind
my back the next? The thing that frustrated me the most was that I knew I had the same inconsistent
nature as everyone else. This then led to feelings of depression that intensified as I started high school.
My depression was very severe by the time I entered college. I had few friends and would never go to
any social event. At the end of my junior year, I dropped out because my depression was so bad that I
couldn’t function. I couldn’t get out of bed at times. Three years later, I returned, but the same
emotional problems dogged me/.
That first fall back in school, I ran into some Christians that shared the Gospel with me. They told me
God sent JesusChrist to die on the cross to pay the penalty for my sins, and rose from the dead to justify
me before God. I needed to accept that for myself. These Christians said if I would believe in what Jesus
did for me, then God would be free to work n my life and start making me into a new man.
The gospel made sense to me. It rationally answered the questions I had always wanted answered
about my life. I accepted Christ into my life, but was not a very committed believer. It was only many
years later when I had that motorcycle accident, that I finally committed my heart and life to the Lord
Jesus. I asked Him to create in me a clean heart. I asked Him to make me the kind of man he had always
planned for. I wanted the eternal life He promises to those that trust in Him.
I’m now united with other Christians who want to tell people about the message of God’s forgiveness
and newness of life. My life has begun to change for the better – very much better. The days I’m
depressed are now fewer and father between. I’m developing relationships with people that I would
not have been able to before.
Your frustrations, failures, and fears can also be dealt with at the cross of Jesus. It’s simple.
Acknowledge to God that you are a sinner and have fallen short of His perfect standard. Ask Him to
forgive your sin through Jesus, who died in your place. Jesus paid the penalty for your sins! Ask him to
help and guide you through your new relationship with Him. You will never regret it. If you would like

Here are some verses from the Bible that help explain the gospel:
Romans 3:23 For all have sinned and fall short of the the glory of God.
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ jesus.
John 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son that whoever should believe in
Him shall not perish but have eternal life.
John 5:24 I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes Him who sent me has eternal life
and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life.
Romans 10:9-10 If you confess with your mouth “Jesus is Lord” and believe in your heart that God raised
Him from the dead, you will be saved.
