Turnitin®
Your written assignments should be original writing and include citations as described in the APA style
guide. Turnitin® is an online tool that scans written assignments for signs of plagiarism and may be
used to screen your assignment submissions. Please go to

Please refer to the College catalog for additional information.
Repeating the Course
You may repeat a course in an attempt to improve a grade previously earned. However, you are
limited in your attempts to courses where a “D,” “F,” or “FN” grade was earned. You have only three
total attempts in any course, including the original grade, repeat grades, and withdrawals. Upon the
third attempt in a course, you must be given an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F”.
When you repeat a course at Florida State College, only the last grade earned is calculated in your
cumulative grade point average (GPA). If you have an excessive number of “W” or “FN” grades and
repeat courses to improve your GPA, you may jeopardize your admission to programs in the Florida
State University System (SUS) or other institutions.

Calendar of Activities

Special Note: The instructor reserves the right to modify this syllabus. You will be notified of any
changes.
Academic Dishonesty Policy
Academic dishonesty, in any form, has severe consequences. Click here to view FSCJ’s academic
dishonesty definitions and procedures.
Academic dishonesty incorporates the following:



Cheating, which is defined as the giving or taking of any information or material with the intent
of wrongfully aiding one’s self or another in academic work considered in the determination of
course grade or the outcome of a standardized test.
Plagiarism, which is define as the act of stealing or passing off as one’s own work the words,
ideas or conclusions of another as if the work submitted were the product of one’s own
thinking rather than an idea or product derived from another source.
Any other form of inappropriate behavior which may include but is not limited to: falsifying
records or data, lying, unauthorized copying, tampering, abusing or otherwise unethically
using computer or other stored information, and any other act or misconduct which may
reasonably be deemed to be a part of this heading.
Any student alleged to have committed any act of academic dishonesty as defined herein shall be
entitled to due process as defined in District Board of Trustees’ Rule 6Hx7-2.18 prior to the
administration of disciplinary action including suspension and dismissal.
Make-up Policy:
ALL assignments will be available online. If you are absent YOU are responsible for printing it offline.
The time allotted for make-up work will be equal to the time the student missed. For example: If a
student misses one day, then they have one day to make up the missed assignment for a full grade.
Any time after that, the work is considered late and will be graded according to the late work policy.
When a student is present for the issuing of an assignment and then absent the day it is due, the
assignment is to be turned in the next day the student is back in class. Failure to do so will result in the
assignment being classified as late work and will be graded accordingly.
If you miss a lab, you cannot make it up.
Late Policy:
Every day an assignment is late, 20% will be taken off. I am teaching four subjects this year. It
is my job to be organized, and I expect the same from you. You MUST turn late work and
make-up work into the late folder!
Laboratory Protocol and Safety:
Any lab requires that laboratory safety rules and protocols must be followed at all times.
Failure to follow protocol can place you and your classmates in a potentially dangerous
Page 5
OO1010C General Zoology
situation and will not be tolerated. Violation of lab safety and protocols will result in expulsion
from the lab exercise and a grade assignment of zero. In addition you will be issued an
immediate office referral. Reinstatement to active lab status will be considered after a
parent, teacher, and student conference.
Attendance/Tardies
If you are absent, you will be marked absent and must get your make-up work to turn in. You
will receive a zero for the bell ringer that was given that day. Parents, please make an effort
to make doctor’s appointments or any other appointment after school hours so that your
child can be in class. I will only accept excused absences as written notes with phone
numbers where I can reach the parent or guardian who wrote the note. I will most likely call
the number on the note to ensure its authenticity.
You need to get to my classroom on time. Coming in late disrupts the entire class and is
unfair to everyone else who is there to learn. You will receive half credit on bell ringers and
zero’s on any quizzes taken at the beginning of class.
Classroom Rules * Rules are subject to change at any time at the discretion of the instructor.
Be in your seat, with your pencil sharpened BEFORE the second bell
Once seated, immediately start the bell ringer
Everyone remains in the classroom for the first and last 20 minutes of each class period, unless
otherwise instructed by the teacher. Please go to the bathroom between classes.
No food is allowed in class.
Show respect and courtesy by not talking while the teacher is talking.
Personal electronic devices are NOT allowed
No profanity or bullying will be tolerated.
Expectations of Student Conduct
It is expected that each of you use appropriate, professional language and respect when
addressing classmates, as well as your instructor, in the classroom. That same level of
professional conduct should extend to all assignments submitted. It is expected that you will
not make insulting or inflammatory statements to other members of the class. Be positive,
thoughtful, and constructive in your comments and responses. Click here to view FSCJ's
Expectations of Student Conduct.
Recommendations for Success in this Course
General

Have a place where you can study and set aside an appropriate amount of time to do it.
Generally, a 3-credit hour course requires a minimum of 12 hours of self-study time each week
in addition to the time spent completing assignments.

Practice and repetition are the best way to ensure your mastery of the material.

Communicate with your instructor to ask any important questions and to discuss important
concepts.
Page 6
OO1010C General Zoology

Complete all reading assignments and view and review all chapter resources.

Complete and review all classroom activities.
Notes/Bell Ringers
o
o
You are required to have your unit notes before we begin that unit, and they can be
found on the class website. Every class period they are late I will deduct 20%. If you do
not have a printer, you can use the printer in the school library (you must bring your own
paper and 10 cents per page), or copy them by hand prior to coming to class.
Bell ringers are a way for me to present material in a way that promotes critical thinking
and discussion. It is also a way for me to ensure you are participating and present.
Attendance is vital in this class, and so is being on time. If you are absent, you will
receive a zero for that day’s bell ringer, and if you are late, you will receive half credit.
Tests/Quizzes
o
o
You will have 2-3 tests a quarter, and 1-2 quizzes every unit. The quizzes will be at the
beginning of every class, and if you are late to class you will not be able to take the
quiz.
In the PPTs, there will be pauses for practice questions. I will randomly select names out
of a cup (via popsicle sticks) and that person must do their best to answer the question.
You must be present and try at the question if your name is called and you receive full
credit. These will count as a quiz grade every quarter.
Classwork/Homework
o
o
Every unit there will be a study guide. This must be completed on your own as
homework. The only other homework in this class will be to finish any work you did not
finish in class.
Classwork MUST be completed in class unless I have given special permission for you to
take the work home to finish. This is to ensure that all students work diligently during class
to finish their work.
College Resources
Florida State College at Jacksonville offers many resources to help you become successful in your
course and academic career. A brief description of some of these resources follows.
Academic Advising
FSCJ Counselors and advisors and high school guidance counselors are available to assist students
with the achievement of their academic goals. When a student reaches 30 semester hours of credit,
they must meet with an FSCJ Advisor. FSCJ Academic advising is available to help students identify
appropriate courses, select majors and select transfer institutions. Students are encouraged to seek
advising on a regular basis in order to achieve their educational objectives. Appointments may be
scheduled through the counseling and advising office. However, students should know that
appointment times will be severely impacted during peak registration periods.
