In-Text Citations
Citing The Alchemist:
1.
Parentheses at the end of the sentence
2.
Write the author’s last name
3.
Leave a space and put the page number
4.
Put the period after the parentheses
Example: “There were thousands of people there, arguing, selling, and buying; vegetables for sale amongst daggers, and carpets
displayed alongside tobacco” (Coelho 37).
Citing “Harlem”
1.
Parentheses at the end of the sentence
2.
Write the title of the poem in quotations
3.
Leave a space for the line numbers
4.
Put a period after the parentheses
Example: “Maybe it just sags / like a heavy load. / Or does it explode?” (“Harlem” 9-11).
Citing an Article With an Author
1.
Introduce the article name in the sentence
2.
Parentheses at the end of the sentence
3.
Write the author’s last name
4.
Put the period at the end of the parentheses
Example: According to the article “Jung’s Dream Theory,” “In Jung's view, dreams are the direct, natural expression of the current
condition of the dreamer's mental world” (Bulkley).
Citing an Article Without an Author
1.
Introduce the article name in the sentence in quotation marks
2.
Parentheses at the end of the sentence
3.
Write out a shortened version of the article’s name
4.
Period at the end of the parentheses
Example: “Book Reviews: The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho” states that “You can use the story of Santiago on so many different
levels” (Book Reviews).
Citing a Painting
1.
Introduce the title of the painting in the sentence
2.
Parentheses at the end of the sentence
3.
Write the painter’s last name
4.
Period at the end of the parentheses
Example: The painting “The Alchemist,” by Salvador Dali, predates the novella, but the images suggest a journey of spiritual
ascension (Dali).
Works Cited Page

Put the title “Works Cited” on the last page of your essay.
Alphabetize your sources by last name. If a source does not have an author, use the title.
Use a hanging indent for each quote; this means that the first line is not indented but the following lines are.
