January 2015 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE By the time you read this 2014 will be history and what a great year it’s been! The Historical Society has grown with memberships reaching an all-time high! There were many firsts in 2014, such as the Independence Day float, a new website and a quarterly newsletter. Our committees continue to amaze me with their hard work and commitment to furthering the society’s goals. Our interns bring us a young perspective and enthusiasm for history. This doesn’t mean that we have everything covered. We are always looking for help in increasing awareness of the history of Cornwall, Cornwall on Hudson and Mountainville to the local population, personal knowledge is needed, though we have many knowledgeable people active in the society we need others to help. If you have memories or stories about Cornwall and the surrounding communities we would love to hear them. Please take an hour or two out of your busy schedule and spend some time with us at one of our many events such as our monthly general membership meeting, Independence Day celebration or River Fest. I promise you will have a great time, meet new friends and catch up with old ones. Once you spend some time with us, you will find that we are committed to preserving the history of our home and we have a lot of fun doing it! Displays are on view in the museum as well a in the Cornwall Public Library. Even though the museum occupies on two rooms in Town Hall it serves as a base of operations for many of the Society’s activities and events in 2014. The Museum Committee and sub-committees created, planned and participated in the following: Establishing a Wall of Honor in memory for Andrew J. Maroney, Jr. to salute Cornwall veterans and those currently serving. Seasonally decorating the showcase in the public library with historic artifacts. Updating Facebook, answering emails and creating a new website for 2015. Researching the 600+ names listed on the World War II Wall of Honor. Processing the William E Fulton Scholarship applications. Planning a successful Wine and Cheese fundraiser. Updating the maps of Cornwall’s historic buildings. Creating a student intern program. Guiding the student interns in formulating, designing and implementing a float for the Independence Day Parade. Selecting themes and preparing booths for RiverFest, Fourth of July, and September’s Fall Festival. And designing and writing the newsletter, which you are currently reading. We believe that the history of Cornwall is reflected in our citizens of all ages, some of who are descendants of our founding families. We hope that you, as members of the society will continue to support our efforts to tell Cornwall’s story. The new committee has finished with the first phase of documenting all of the names listed. Betty Ziegler has given each name his/her own page with space for their pictures, military service and civilian information. So far the she and Jeanne Maroney have filled 10 binders. They have documented approximately 80 veterans. Jeanne Maroney has researched at the Cornwall Library. There are still over 600 veterans without information. We still have a long way to go. If you know or are acquainted with anyone listed on the Wall of Honor please let us know. Further, if you have any photos, old or new or know anyone who does please contact us. Our goal is to honor all Veterans from Cornwall, Cornwall on Hudson and the surrounding area for their service. 3 ARTIFACT DONORS FOR 2014 Thank you to the following people for making artifact donations to the Cornwall Historical Society in 2014.
