International students face several challenges upon arriving in the United
States
Most important are linguistic, cultural, and technological barriers (Brown
337-348)
Their information-seeking and communication styles are different. (Wang
and Frank 207-216)
Adjusting to a new living and learning environment and getting familiar with
the American educational system, the academic library structure, and how
information is managed. (Kumar and Suresh 327-336)
How they use academic libraries. They have different library experiences,
library vocabulary and jargon. They have different search habits, resources
and services available to them. (Yi 666–673) (Howze 57-74)




International students are familiar with computers and the Internet but have
less experience in assessing, retrieving, and evaluating electronic library
resources. (Jackson 197-209)
They have different learning styles (Chattoo 349-362)
Using theories of second language acquisition and teaching to library
instruction may help. (Conteh-Morgan 191-196)
Librarians are usually sensitive to language barriers but are not always
effective in communicating with international students. (Curry 409–420)
(Conteh-Morgan 191-196)
